GARY MACKAY-STEVEN could rejoin Aberdeen next week when the transfer window opens.

Dons boss Derek McInnes has confirmed he would be open to the idea of re-signing the winger after his release from New York City.

SunSport understands initial talks have already taken place with the ex-Celtic and Scotland star’s representatives.

But McInnes has made it clear finding a replacement for injured hitman Marley Watkins is his No 1 priority in January.

Mackay-Steven, who left Aberdeen for the MLS in June 2019, is available on a free after Ronny Deila’s City opted not to renew his contract.

McInnes said: “For us, anything we can or can’t do will be dependent on us being able to move one or two players on.

We’ve got one or two positions prioritised and players within that.

“But we would always be open to bringing good players to the club. Gary’s exactly that.

“We didn’t want to lose him in the first place. His numbers were good with us.

“There are other positions we maybe need to try and focus on more to be honest. It looks like Marley probably won’t be fit until February.”
