Not sure about 88, still it's the player and what he does that counts - not the number on his back.

He probably asked for the number, don't really see any other reason for it. Welcome Mr.Hooper!:icon_mrgreen:

Celtic's busy summer in the transfer market shows no signs of abating after they completed the capture of Gary Hooper.
Hooper's[IMG] move from Scunthorpe has been finalised in time for him to make his debut in Wednesday's UEFA Champions League[IMG] qualifier against Braga.
Celtic[IMG] manager Neil Lennon[IMG] is allowed to make one change to his European squad which was registered with Uefa last week, provided the player's registration is completed at least 24 hours before kick-off.
The former Southend hit-man is due to arrive at Glasgow airport on Tuesday morning to meet up with his new team-mates before flying to Portugal.
"(Hooper) will be coming later on," Lennon confirmed. "There is just a little bit of paperwork we had to smooth over.
"I don't know about playing but he will be in the squad. I was pleased to get him, he has been on our radar for quite a while.
"I think we have a good player on our hands, his record is very good. It's not just goals, he can play a little bit as well."
Hooper is the club's sixth signing this close season following the arrivals of Cha Du-Ri, Efrain Juarez,[IMG] Joe Ledley,[IMG] Daryl Murphy[IMG] and Charlie Mulgrew.[IMG]
Meanwhile, newly-promoted Spanish outfit Hercules remain keen on Celtic's Greece international striker Georgios Samaras.
The 25-year-old has already snubbed the opportunity to join the Alicante-based side, although they have not given up hope of landing his signature.
"We still want Samaras, but he has other options too," said the club's sporting director Paquito. "We are still looking for attacking players."

well it's a bit wierd that if he chose it because his birth year ( 1988 ) , and obviously when celtic was founded ( 1888 ).

If he is a hit, then it could actually go down a huge success.

His away shirt is going to have a * load of 8's on it haha

Hes probably not aware of the darker reasoning for wanting the number 88 shirt as worn by other players in sports..

    Welcome to Celtic Gary..

It's just a number guys, plys, he probobly asked Lennon for that number, it's not as if Lennon went up to him and said. " Here, your wearing number 88." They usually try to give them as small a number as possible unless they want a bigger number

Couldn't care less what number he has on his shirt. Think this guy is an outstanding player and reckon he is exactly what we're missing up front. Gonna score a bucket load in the SPL.

Most exciting signing of the window in my opinion.

    Welcome to Paradise Gary.
