Regarding his wages, still can't help wondering why he said he'd never say no to us? He must've known he'd have to get less if it ever happened. It's still a long shot but I'm hoping his happiness is worth more than the millions as he'll be sorted for life already.

He pretty much single handedly saved us in some games last year. Massive loss if he doesn't return....quote possibly another Pistol Pete Production, back to the bargain bin.

If we can afford to shell out 2.5 million on players who are not the finished article then we can afford to pay 5 million for a world class goalkeeper

It's easy to be pessimistic about landing Fraser on permanent because the finances involved. That being said let's look at the facts as they appear. We want Forster, it's seems Forster wants to come here and Southampton want to sell.

Southampton have time on their side right now, they will be hoping to field better offers but as time goes by they might start wobbling.

Hopefully Forster has flexibility in his wage demands too

Don't believe any of that. Why would he suddenly go from 3rd(?) choice to challenging for a position ? Still think he'll be back.

Don't see us not spending the £5m it'll be wages if he's on 75-90k a week down there , he will need to take roughly 70-80% drop tbh

Impossible for the media to have a day of good Celtic news with Elyonoussi signing.

Always throw in a negative to detract from a positive. Always been the same.

    Let’s see what happens.

Celtic’s chase of Fraser Forster is dead in the water after the shotstopper opted to fight for the No.1 slot at Southampton.

Record Sport understands the Parkhead side’s hopes of signing the giant keeper are now over – despite agreeing with Saints a one-year loan deal with a view to a permanent move next summer.

Hoops boss Neil Lennon is believed to be bitterly disappointed after thrashing out terms with the English Premier League side to bring the Three Lions man back for the club’s 10-in-a-row bid.

But he has been told Forster is keen to battle it out with Alex McCarthy and Angus Gunn for a starting role with Saints on the back of a sparkling season with Celtic last term.

St Mary’s chiefs are looking to offload one of their keepers but it is understood they will look to cash in on one of the other glove rivals and keep Forster to scrap to get in to the side.

Celtic have on Wednesday morning admitted defeat in their pursuit – and will now turn their attention to other targets, with England keeper Joe Hart still on the radar.

Lennon was desperate to keep Forster after the big Geordie played a key role in the club’s success last season while Craig Gordon rejected a reduced deal and opted to sign for Hearts.

But the Hoops manager still has several back-up targets, with Hart’s camp already in dialogue and others, such as former Celtic star David Marshall also being considered.

Domestically, Bain or a few other keepers could stand between the posts and it wouldn't matter a jot. Let's wait and see what plan B is, surely there is a contingency.

    'Record sport understands...'

    The universal language of pish.

Not one quote in the whole article either.

    Also, 'the three lions man'

    Who writes that pish? :giggle1:

Not going to pretend that it's not a huge blow to not have him back.

I hope we've scouted well to replace him. Bain is a decent number two but he should in no way be our number one. Massive drop down in quality from Forster to Bain.

STV reporting the same as the other lot

Fraser Forster will not be signing for Celtic this summer after the goalkeeper decided to remain at Southampton.

The goalkeeper, who excelled during his loan spell at Parkhead last season, looked set to rejoin the champions on a further year-long loan deal with Celtic having the option to buy.

Following discussions with the Saints hierarchy, Forster has opted to stay at the Saints.

Forster became a favourite with Celtic fans during his first spell at the club, when he won three league titles and two Scottish Cups following a move from Newcastle.

Last season’s return on loan strengthened his bond with the club after he played an important role in their success and was keen on a permanent transfer.

This won’t happen now and he will compete with Alex McCarthy and Angus Gunn to be Ralph Hasenhüttl’s first choice at St Mary’s.

The news comes after Norwegian attacker Mohamed Elyounoussi agreed a new one-year loan from Southampton.

Celtic will now look elsewhere for a goalkeeper as Neil Lennon strengthens his squad for their bid to win a tenth consecutive title.

Scott Bain remains on the books at Parkhead but Craig Gordon left the club at the end of his contract and signed for Hearts earlier this week.

Joe Hart and David Marshall have both been linked but Celtic have a number of options and are likely to move quickly to make a signing early in pre-season training.
