Right, sure I approached this before but never did anything.

Proper novice here. What's the best way to go about getting into whisky? Euros next year and I simply cannot be firing vodka or tequila in my hipper.

Start with blends or single malt? Recommendations please good people? Should I buy miniatures to try different ones out or persevere with a couple to get going?

Personally i would go for a Glenmorangie or Balvenie, for blended whisky you won't go wrong with Johnny Walker black label or Chivas Regal, there's zillions out there to try.

Any whisky sittin at 30 quid in the supernmarket always comes down to around 20, so look out for a bargain, usually plenty on the go.

At the start it'll be a bit of trial and error, your own taste buds will guide you lol.

I never add water to mine but everyone is different.

Recently polished off a bottle of Ardbeg, was a birthday present off my gaffer. Very peaty, almost tastes like drinking smoke :56:

Definitely one for the connoisseurs, enjoyed it but not one you can sit and drink all night.

Gonnae grab a bottle of Dalwhinnie Winter Gold next for Christmas time.

I just started off with Jamesons mate. Then started trying different ones in the pub here and there.

Could try with the miniatures but the selection won’t be great. I’d just go balls out and try different ones until you get into a certain kind.

Not a massive whisky fan. But if I am to drink it it's usually the local dalmore 12yo

Unfortunately the offers this year haven't been great. From what's on Amazon at the moment I'd probably go for the Glen Grant 10 for £24.99 and the Chivas Regal extra 13 for £22.99. I'll be honest and say I haven't tried the CR 13 yet, but I've heard good things about it and will prob be getting a bottle for Christmas I expect. They are 2 different styles, the GG is a single malt and matured in ex bourbon barrels, where the CR is a blend and matured in ex sherry casks, so they should give you a reasonable contrast. Neither are peated so shouldn't be too challenging.

Dalmore is a good quality whisky, for me it's a bit over priced, but still good stuff.

I'd avoid the stones. I'd advise trying the whisky without ice first, but if you do need it use 1 BIG chunk, rather than lots of smaller cubes. The large one will melt slower and so not dilute the whisky as much.

Aye it is mate. The distillery is about 150metres from my house. Cant say I'm too adventurous with the whisky. Last year I bought a bottle of highland park 12yo for hot toddies cause I was * with the cold. Only just finished that bottle 2 months ago. Quite enjoyed the last few drams in it right enough

Sorry Prof, I have to disagree, well not about it being overpriced. I used to be a big fan of Dalmore 15, but the quality over the last 2 or 3 years from all the Dalmore's I've had has fallen off a cliff. I can't really advise anyone to pay what they are costing to be honest, there are so many better ones to be had for less.

I was working up in orkney a couple years ago and staying in a hotel that done highland park. £1500 a nip :56: and you had to have at least 4 nips for them to open the bottle.

Decided to stick to the tennents:56:

Ardbeg 10 was my first whisky and the one that got me interested in them. For the majority of people you are right, peaty ones are not a good introduction, but there are still a fair few where the peaty ones are the ones that get them hooked straight away.

That being said I'd never give a newbie a peaty whisky first. I'd let them try some other first. If for no others reason than they probably won't be able to taste anything else after their first hit of peat!
