    Why? I thought it seemed quite neutral and gave a kind of insight into the issue.

    It should not have happened in the first place. Ordinary men, women and children fought for the freedom of their country. They had every right to do it. They were not lining their pockets and stealing land. Look at Ukraine/russia now. The double standards of england/Britain makes my blood boil.

    Was it not a well known Irishman just giving his perspective about the pros and cons of whether to celebrate it or not?

    Fergal Keane is a cool guy in my opinion.I usually enjoy anything he presents.

    I agree but sometimes you need to take a side. There is clearly good people and bad in the whole easter rising.

    It was a good article and unbiased . The problem is we need more honesty and not for the British army to always come out like the good guys. People are afraid to tell it like it is. Yeah they were young kids etc but the stuff that happened in Ireland is unforgivable.

    West Brit apologist.

    The fact that the rebels rose up without asking the people of Ireland what they felt, and did so in defiance of their moderate comrades, tends to be glossed over in the official remembrance of a modern democratic Ireland.

    Did he expect the rebels to ask the British to hold a referendum on the matter?

    There is no mention of the British responce to the rising. It was the execution of the leaders that gave the rising it's significance. Mention of that of course would not sit well with his agenda.

    Just googled the * before finishing the post. Fergal Keane OBE. Say it all really

    Tears ran down her cheeks when they told her of James Connolly’s execution. ‘You needn’t tell me,’ she said. ‘I knew. Why don’t they let me die with my friends!’

    Connolly’s death affected her more than any other. Following the women’s visit she wrote:

    ‘You died for your country my Hero-love

    In the first grey dawn of Spring;

    On your lips was a prayer to * above

    That your death will have helped to bring

    Freedom and peace to the land you love,

    Love above everything.’
