Derby days: Celtic’s most memorable Old Firm victories against Rangers in the last decade

The Old Firm derby is one of the most fiercely contested matches in Europe and arguably the world.

Over the past decade, the mighty Hoops have been on the right end of some resounding wins over our noisy Glaswegian neighbours.

Here is a look back at Celtic’s most memorable Old Firm victories against Rangers in the last decade.

    3. Celtic 5-0 Rangers (29 April 2018)

It only makes sense to start with a glorious 5-0 drubbing at Celtic Park in the 2017-18 season, which saw the Hoops crowned champions while the lowly Gers finished in third. There was a gulf in class in late April when Celtic put on a dominant display in a match that was, in reality, over at half-time. Two from Odsonne Edouard and a 45th-minute James Forrest strike gave the home side a 3-0 lead at the break.

It didn’t take long for the Hoops to go further in the ascendancy, with Tom Rogic and Callum McGregor making it 5-0 within eight minutes of half-time, as we held out for a comfortable victory. After a brief hiatus at the SPL summit, it seems the Hoops are back on top in 2022-23. Having lost just once in 26 matches at the start of March, Ange Postecoglou’s side have near-certain odds of 1/33 to be crowned champions on 888 Sport, a sportsbook that is among the UK’s top 20 new betting sites. This is due to a welcome bonus that includes receiving £30 in free bets if £10 is bet, offers for existing customers and a wide range of payment methods that ensures it's as convenient as possible. With the league title practically wrapped up, bettors are likely to be looking for other markets to bet on.

    2. Rangers 2-3 Celtic (11 March 2018)

While a thrashing is always good fun, there is nothing quite like snatching a narrow victory in an Old Firm derby – even more so if it takes place at Ibrox. That’s exactly what happened just over a month before the 5-0 drubbing at Celtic Park, with our Hoops on the right side of a five-goal thriller that will live long in the memory of the Celtic faithful. A lightning start saw the home side strike first through Josh Windass before Rogic was on hand again to equalise not long after.

Rangers responded before the half-hour mark through Daniel Candeias’ strike, which gave the home side a short-lived advantage until Moussa Dembele snatched another Celtic equaliser just before half-time. Despite the Hoops being down to 10 men after Jozo Simunovic’s straight red card, Edouard scored a vital 69th-minute winner as Celtic put in a resolute performance, which makes it worthy of a top-three finish on this list.

    1. Rangers 1-5 Celtic (29 April 2017)

So far, this list has seen Celtic dominate at home and * a thrilling victory at Ibrox – but in top spot is a combination of the two. To be able to put in such a dominant display at the home of our eternal rivals is the pinnacle of derby-day bragging rights, which is why it places top of this list.

On the day, Celtic pulled into an early lead with a Sinclair penalty and Leigh Griffiths strike, making it 0-2 within 18 minutes. In the second half, Callum McGregor and Dedryck Boyata made it four, with Rangers’ Kenny Miller the only one to offer a response for the home side. 1-4 was made 1-5 when Mikael Lustig put the icing on the cake of a dominant display at the Gers’ backyard, reflective of a perfect season for the Hoops. Under Rodgers's guidance, Celtic romped to yet another Scottish title, having not lost a league game all season, ending the season on a staggering 106 points, while Rangers languished down in third, with just 67 to their name.

As mentioned, Celtic’s domination in the league appears to have returned, with Postecoglou’s men pulling away with it this campaign, and it seems that it is here to stay. The same can be said for bragging rights in the Old Firm derby, with Celtic already beating Rangers twice in all competitions this campaign.
