Aye that’s very true, I’ve always wondered why we don’t do more business outside the windows. Teams rarely do, must just not be the ‘done’ thing.

I thought tapping up players outside the window was against the rules?

    Because it can unsettle them.

You can buy players anytime of the year. The windows are just purely team registration periods. I presume we dont do it incase a player gets injured before the window opens.

That and we are least proactive club on the planet.

It's only tapping up if you speak to the player without the clubs knowledge.

Couldn't that unsettle a player? I have never heard of a club allowing agents to speak to players before windows. As a fan I wouldn't want a player getting distracted.

We've seen the same story time and again.

If we really want him, * put in an offer that is acceptable. I'm sick and tired of us * about with poor offers for talent in our league.

We have the cheek to suggest that teams wanting our players need to pay top dollar and then our bids for targets are immediately rejected because they're too low and then the player moves south and has a great season.

Its between us and Barnsley. If we lose out to Barnsley then Lawell will have dragged us into a whole new level of humiliation in the transfer window. Motherwell will accept around £2.5 million, we clearly want him so lets not drag this out and risk further embarrassment should another club come in and take him from under noses.

Is it true we always put in poor offers? When Ronny was here apparently we had a new approach of signing good Scottish talent and we signed GMS and Armstrong. They were quite well regarded at the time.

The longer it goes on the more interested other clubs will become. It’s a total farce

It feels like there's one every season that has potential to become something and we're obviously interested.

McGinn saga last year was embarrassing. We kept puttung in low ball bids and villa got him at a snip at £2.7m. Off the top of my head, we've been poor going after Fletcher, McCarthy, McGinn, Russell.

GMS we got at a pittance because he was going into his last 6 months of his contract. Armstrong was a success here and I think the fee was decent for all involved. One out of 5 there in recent history.

Edit: and we bid an acceptable offer for Christie. 2 put of six. A third of the players that we've gone after we've actually put in an acceptable offer.

I know we should pay what we think the player is worth. We're not doing that though. We're low balling and are shocked when someone pays the going rate and they're on their way south of the border.

Have to say I wouldn't want us spending £3m on him, he's played 1 season, McGinn was less than that and had been round the block and sure was already in International team, think We'll are ripping the * out it.

Maybe giving us this hefty price hoping it'll start English teams starting a bidding war because they'll think John McGinn.

At the end of the day, he's a promising 19 year old. We pay what Motherwell want, or thereabouts, if the manager etc think he has the potential to make it here and stay long term or to go up in value. It doesn't matter too much that he's only had one good season or half a season. We pay guys to look be able to judge someone on that basis and determine how good he is or could be.

That's a good argument although I can only think of McGinn and McCarthy out of all those who I would definitely say was a chance missed.

Never did understand the commotion over Fletcher, didn't see the consistency.

I'm a bit inbetwixt, should we buy every player who is available or do the board ask the current manager about the value of a prospect? Us missing out on McGinn I was raging at the board for but I'm really not sure anymore. It was hardly a ground shaking amount of money.

I'm sure or at least hoping Lenny will have discussed this before signing because he left when they didn't trust him last time. Almost cut off their nose to spite their face when putting Ronny in charge.

*, now it does get confusing.

@Pennywise We also have to watch out for teams overinflating prices when they hear we're involved. Barnsley aren't going to make them ask for much more like we will.

    I get this doesn’t paint the full picture, however;

John McGinn in Scotland (including 2 seasons in the 2nd tier) - 234 games 21 goals

David Turnbull in Scotland - 34 games 15 goals

This guy has clear potential, is being raved about and Motherwell are well within their rights to ask for the 3 million or so if that’s what they believe he’s worth.
