It's not, it's a slightly different strain hence the proper names SARS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2 they are 90% identical.

By that logic every coronavirus should be treated the same, which is nonsense as they affect humans differently regardless of how similar they are in structure.

Covid-19 has not been around since 2003. It isn't the same as SARS.

No a coronavirus is called that because how it looks under a microscope. Coronavirus isn't an actual virus, it's a family of viruses that look the same

It's a different strain of the same virus just as flu isn't the exact same year on year. I guess they just made the name SARS-CoV-2 up for a laugh then?

    Here we go again
Front line NHS staff can't get tested, yet almost 90% of those who are tested are negative. Surely, if the testing is limmited, then there should be a stricter criteria for deciding who to test.

You are all arguing about whats more contagious than the other. Think the point that is being missed here is the severity of COVID-19.
I read a comment by French medical student that commented that Flu from a medical point killed people already on the brink of death. COVID-19 is killing healthy people that wouldn’t otherwise have died. The student also commented that they had x-rayed the lungs of recovered patients between ages of 20-40 and a fair percentage of them had massive scarring in the lungs that will never be repaired probably rendering them unable to even do a simple jog. The argument about flu right now is flawed as we just don’t know enough about this yet. Maybe had China been more forthcoming with their data we would have more of an idea.

Who are you kidding. The staff are disposable. Always have been. Its disgusting. Better get anyone in the public eye tested. Alterior motives going on.

When they test NHS staff,it's not there concerns for their health...it to get or keep them on the shop floor.

Not sure why that’s a bad thing? I’ve seen several doctors on twitter who have had to stay at home and self isolate as someone in their family is showing symptoms. They are dying to get back to work and agree if NHS staff are tested it allows them to get back to what they love doing.

Your point was that since SARS 1 was around in humans in 2003 that its been established and spreading worldwide like the common flu since - and that it suddenly mutated in us. It hasn't. This has been transmitting in humans since December - therefore you're talking *.

Covid-19 is not the same as SARS-1 which isn't the same as MERS either. All coronaviruses attack the respiratory system.

I don't understand your point. They gave it the name SARS-CoV-2 because it's a 2nd virus in the family that causes Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome.

I'm genuinely not certain I understand you, so apologies if I haven't; but you seem to be missing the fact that there are few mitigation measures for flu.

If this epidemic were left unmitigated, the deaths would be orders of magnitude higher than flu.

It's like saying we don't need a measles vaccine as hardly anyone dies of measles these days.

Did I understand you (genuine question) or have I misunderstood your point.
