Ask me the question again when we've had the group stages. Way too early to say the poor away form is a thing of the past but the signs are encouraging that we are learning from past mistakes.

Are we really that bad away or just excellent at home! During mon years no team frightened me at cp, always believed we could on the right night beat anyone. Dont really get that feeling with lennon YET but feel we can always make a good account of ourselves at least. Roll on CL lenny make me believe!

Lets face it folks Helsinki are hopeless, its like Servco the other night slobering over beating East Fife, we were expected to win and did. Yes we have improved as some of last years performances in the Europa showed but again the Europa is not the Champions league its far far weaker. Dont get me wrong Im chuffed with the result and performance yesterday but there is a long way to go yet.

    Yes, it's over.

A "hoodoo" is only a "hoodoo" until its broken.

We've played really well away from home against quality opposition a nunber of times and got beaten, and that was considered part of the negative record, so playing pretty well against mediocre opposition and winning comfortably certainly breaks it.

As far as CL games go, it was over when we beat Dinamo Moscow 2-0 in Moscow a couple of years back.

As far as non-CL games go, it never existed in the first place - can well remember our excellent away victories against the likes of Liverpool, Blackburn, Boavista etc. :50:

Was our problem really not being able to win away in the CL Group stages? We have won away qualifiers a few times before. Ajax, Dinamo, Kaunas and Siduva to name a few.

Were improving but we'd have to continue it for a while longer before id say were past it and stop losing silly goals through our own mistakes and early goals aswell.

We were lucky last night, Helsinki had those two great chances when the helsinki boy basically had a 1 v 1 and put it past the post ( I think Forster mad a great save on that one?) Also the header that was a fantastic save as well. Definatley an improvement from previous outings though.

Really can't agree that we were lucky. Thought Celtic contained them well for most of the game.

Give credit were it is due. Do agree that we will need to improve next round.

We have seen an improvement in this department, no question. Think the experiences of going to Rennes & Udinese last season has stood the Bhoys in good stead, as they are writng thier own chapter of Celtic history.

There will be those that point to the record and say '2 wins in 34 away trips', but if we take it from last season and moving forward we have had 5 away trips with 1 win, 2 draws & 2 losses (though one of these has been overturned into a 3-0 win over Sion), so in the history books we have 2 wins, 2 draws & 1 loss.

Let's look at the past 5 Champions League winners & how many away games they actually won in their respective campaigns (finals not included, as these are neutral):

    Chelsea - 1 away win in 2011/12
    Barca - 3 away wins in 2010/11
    Inter - 3 away wins in 2009/10
    Barca - 3 away wins in 2008/09
    Man U - 3 away wins in 2007/08

So, at best the last 5 champions have a 50% away win record (3 grp games, last 16, Q/F & S/F) & the current holders won just a single game away from Stamford Bridge. What is important is if we can try and get something 'away from Parkhead & once again turn Parkhead into as much of a fortress as possible - for that is the key to success in getting through in Europe.

Sometimes things are made worse by the MSM in our country though, if celtic have good home results in europe and get the odd draw even a win we are not far off doing well in a season on the euro front.

This "away record" thing is something which has bemused me for sometime. Juventus, Barcelona,AC Milan, Man Utd, Benfica, Lyon, Villarreal and Bayern Munich are teams on this list of away games in which we haven`t won. While we may be the best in Scotland, on the majority of occasions we really should be struggling to beat them. In a great number of these occasions we`ve competed throughout the 90 mins and lost by the odd goal. On other occasions its been the opposite and teams which we are more than capable of beating (off the top of my head, Anderlecht, Utrecht & Copenhagen).

If anything the magnificent home wins against a number of these sides should be highlighted. However as pointed out and we have seen over the last few months, those who have the chance to talk the game up prefer to ridicule and ignore the positives.

Disagree,we had a of opportunities in the first half and probably the best chance of the whole game with Scott Brown.

I thought we looked very comfortable for the majority of the match and dealt easily with Helsinki`s main threats.

Hard to say until we reach the group stages. I thought the opposition last night was very limited, kind of like playing Hearts. They look no better than a top half SPL side. There will be a quantum leap when we reach the real CL. All the same we did play a very mature game last night. The question is can we handle CL level opposition.

Another thing is that I dont really care if we are crap away if we make the CL, make the last 16 etc.

We normally just find it hard to settle into away games, the amount of early goals we concede is frustrating. We never really get annihilated away from home.

The away curse is a self fulfilling prophecy that if spouted enough by the media, journalists etc becomes ingrained in the belief system of the players and managment.
The only way to break it is to find evidence to disprove the fixed belief. This has started to happen. Its like anything in life if you set yourself realistic achievable goals you are more likely to have success than if you set your goals too high at first. Success breeds success.Start by beating Helsinki before you even think about getting results against the likes of Man u or Barcelona. Slowly slowly wins the race. Each year we should look to improve our results in Europe that is enough progress. Not set our sights on reachig the last 16 , well not just yet!:56:

Was Bayern not playing at home as the final was in Munich last year...

...anyways, I have to agree that its important to pick up points away from home, a draw is a great result in the CL away from home, because it will more or less kill off the away team's chances.

I think the results are from experience, Lenny's experience...in the past MON and WGS tried to play the same attack minded style 3-5-2, 4-4-2, and it backfired badly...and Lenny who was part of both teams, will know that in Europe, possession is key, and to have any chance you have to dominate and command the midfield. Thats why he goes for the 4-5-1, an extra man in midfield makes a great difference.

Agree would be happy just to get to the group stages this year, anything else is a bonus.Too many fans expect too much too soon, this is a young side with a young manager who need the experiance & were only going to improve each year, gettin to the cl group stages this year would be a massive achievement never mind last 16.
