Young Celts sparkle in Glasgow Cup victory

    CELTIC...4
    (Johnston 21, Watson 38, Bowers 54, Patrick-Campbell 88)
    Sevco...0
CELTIC Under-17s powered to Glasgow Cup glory for the third year running with an emphatic 4-0 win over Sevco at Ibrox tonight (Thursday).
After a tense end-to-end opening, Michael O’Halloran’s side went on to dominate the derby clash and score two clinical strikes in the first-half through Mikey Johnston and Broque Watson.
Shaun Bowers’ charging run and deflected finish early in the second-half put the Celts completely in charge before substitute Kieran Patrick-Campbell capped off an excellent performance from the Bhoys with a chipped finish two minutes before the end.
The Celts saw out the final stages in comfortable fashion to retain the historic trophy, despite a late surge from the Ibrox side, and they will hope to carry their positive momentum forward into the league as the title race approaches its conclusion in the coming weeks
The match started with all the typical fervour of a Glasgow derby with both teams trading chances in the opening minutes.
The Bhoys spurned a chance to break the deadlock after 16 minutes when Ewan Henderson’s shot was only partially saved by Kieran Wright but the midfielder’s rebounded header was hooked off the line by the home defence.
It wasn’t long until O’Halloran’s side did take the lead, however, and it came from brilliant individual skill from Johnston in the box. The diminutive attacker had done well to gather in the area and beat his man but he lost his footing, only to regain his composure, beat his marker again and fire a stunning left-footed shot into the net past Wright.
The Ibrox outfit almost garnered an equaliser through Liam Burt but McAdams did well to tip the striker’s effort round the post.
Celtic almost doubled their lead on the half-hour mark when clever wing play from the lively Jack Aitchison allowed him to slip in Kerr McInroy but his first-time flick crept inches wide.
The end-to-end nature of the play continued as McAdams was called into action again, saving well from Jamie Barjonas’ powerful free-kick, but the Bhoys deservedly added to their advantage on 38 minutes thanks to strong play from Aitchison on the left and clinical finishing from Broque Watson.
Aitchison’s skill took him past Houston on the flank and his shot was parried into the six yard box where Watson pounced to put the Hoops 2-0 up at the break.
Sevco were resurgent after the interval with Burt and Rudden working room to shoot inside the box as the home team earned what seemed like a relentless stream of corners from the restart.
Celtic held firm, however, and powered into an emphatic 3-0 lead against the home side with a stunning counter-attack down the right which saw full-back Bowers intercept a Sevco attack on the flank and burst forward over the half-way line with space ahead of him.
The back-tracking Sevco defence eventually got within range for a tackle but the Hoops youngster showed excellent composure to get the shot away, which deflected off the sliding challenge of a defender and bounced over Wright in goals to put the Celts utterly in control.
The goalscorer was forced to leave the field shortly after as he picked up a knock and he was replaced by Robbie Deas in defence. Sevco also made a double switch, with Burt coming off for Sam Jamieson and Andrew Dallas making way for Jack Adamson after the hour mark.
The home team passed up two great chances to get back into the game with 20 minutes left, with Rudden’s back-header bouncing wide before the striker had a low shot saved by McAdams.
The match then became stretched as it neared the end and the Hoops defence had to contend with a late onslaught from the home team but it was Celtic who had the final say with substitute Campbell supplying a sublime finish to a clinical counter-attack.
McAdams remained composed in goal to help the Bhoys see out the game, with Lewis Bell and Rory McInroy doing well in midfield to break up attacks from the home side and secure a sensational victory for Celtic.
CELTIC (4-3-3) McAdams; Bowers (Deas 63), Welsh, Duffy, Church; Henderson, Bell, McInroy; Watson Campbell 82), Aitchison (Barr 90), Johnston
    Subs: Hurst, Thorburn, Antoniazzi, Potter

    Congrats to the young team.

Notice round about 3:28 as well when the kids are celebrating our goal the steward looks ready to pounce. Just in case any of the 8-10 year old kids cause a ruckus. :smiley-laughing002:
