A few good windows and CL campaigns we can be in this position, even then we’ve paid £8M for Jullien and Edouard in recent seasons. He’ll be straight into those teams on £30K+ though, wages will always be our biggest hurdle.

Let’s be honest here, £8.3m for a guy who has only had a good 6 months is * mental. Would never have even entertained bidding that sort of cash.

Looks like we will struggle to get that sort of cash for a first choice international right back who finished 3rd at the World Cup. Mental money getting flung about these days.

It's more that as said above, I doubt we will ever pay that much for a player in Norway who's had a good 6-12 months.

Benfica can throw that about without really worrying too much if it goes wrong.

Benfica, Ajax etc. are miles ahead of us.

We can maybe afford to take a 3m gamble on someone - we've done it with Klimala for instance. But 8m to us is too much. We'd be hoping for a first team starter and a quality one at that. We can't be bidding that sort of money on a guy from Norway.

We have of course squandered decent money on * players, Ajeti and Barkas spring to mind, but they were supposedly "more established". In truth it was just awful scouting.

We won't pay anything near that, but we should be able to identify Scandinavian talent earlier and develop them, like we did with Ajer. If Tengstedt delivered those numbers for us in the Scottish league we would be able to sell him for double the price than Rosenborg are getting.

I think we'd pay that again for the right player after a very successful loan deal. The board will feel there's less risk involved.

But Benfica, Ajax etc. can afford to shell out 20m on some players, some of whom have only had a good 6 months. Take Bassey at the Huns for instance.

We're never matching that. I can't even see us paying 20m for a high quality first team starter.

I think that massively depends on how we develop ourselves. First things first, we need to develop this team and this style of play. Ajax have never changed the way they play in 40 years. Every player, coach, manager and all recruitment staff are brought in to fit into the same style of play and model.

What’s even crazier is, if you look at their top 10 sales, it’s not like these players have been crazy successful wherever they have went.

De Jong and De Ligt haven’t exactly set the world alight. De Jong barely plays for Barca and De Ligt wasn’t doing well for a * Juventus team, might do better at Bayern, mind. The jury is still out on Antony and Martinez at Man Utd. They could do well again, not like Antony is producing mad numbers and Martinez has had some very dodgy moments. Then you have Davison Sanchez, Donny Van Den Beek and Hakim Ziyech who have been * to be honest. Not done anything.

Don’t get me wrong, they’ve developed some unbelievable players throughout the last few years. Luis Suarez, Klass Jan Huntelaar, Wesley Sneijder and Ibrahimovic being the main ones. Then there are others like Christian Eriksen and Arka Millik. Again though, it’s not like they have this mad success rate.

We need to be regulars in the Champions league group stages. Obviously, there will be times we don’t make it but when we don’t make it, we need to perform better in the Europa League. Simple as that. Getting to the latter stages. Beating bigger teams.

Obviously, we have done exceptionally well with our recruitment over the last 18 months. That needs to continue. We need to go one better now though. Players like Kyogo and GG were great for us domestically but they lacked it in Europe this year. Kyogo and GG could have had 2 or 3 goals each. Lessons need to be learned. It’s going to take us a while but there is no reason we can’t be another Ajax. I think the first team to get to is someone like Club Bruges. When you look at the smaller leagues, Porto/Benfica:Ajax are the kings. I think Club Bruges are trying to get there and have now started to see significant fees come in for there players. They’re starting to spend a fair amount also. Broke their transfer record in the summer. We need to be continually progressing our team and that means spending more money.

Benfica paid 7M€ + 5M€ in potential bonus, apparently. We are also signing Andreas Schjelderup for 10M€ + 5M€ (Norwegian, Nordsjaelland), according to Portuguese press.

In the summer we bought Alexander Bah (Danish) for 8M€ and Fredrik Aursnes (Norwegian) for 13M€ + 2M€. Both are regular starters. Fair to say our coach Roger Schmidt likes Scandinavian players.

Taking into account the sales we have made plus CL money (we play Brugges next), even if he flops it should not be an issue. We already made 8M€+ offloading deadwood during the Winter break, are still in the CL with decent chances to make it to the quarter finals and apparently (hope so) rejected a bid of approximately 100M€ for Enzo Fernández.

Maybe we should be looking again at the youth at Benfica who might not get a chance in the first team because of this signing…

Completely agree. Someone will get let go and picked up by a smaller Portuguese team and will start rifling goals in for fun.

It's a great market to look at.

    Hoping we utilise it more.

It is certainly a market I wish we were more active in, there is some amount of talent in Denmark and Norway in particular at the moment. Sweden has some too but probably not as much as the later two.

The thing is where Benfica would require a higher calibre of player immediately than Celtic, Aursnes was a free agent to Feynoord, I remember because I thought we should sign him at the time and Bah cost Slavia Prague about £1.5m.

Much like Japan, for Norway and Sweden January is the window to sign players in as they play summer football so their contracts tend to end in December rather than June.

There are a number of players who would be worth a look just now and be available for fairly cheap including:

    Johan Hove, CM, Stromgodset
    Carlo Holse, AM, Rosenborg
    Christos Zafeiris, CM, Haugesund
    Fillip Jorgensen, CM, Odd
    Sebastian Jorgensen, RW, Silkborg
    Hugo Vetelssen, CM, Bodo/Glimt
    Yankuba Minteh, RW, OB
    Jakob Breum, LW, OB
    Mads Hermansen, GK, Brondby
    Mihajlo Ivancevic, CB, OB
    Yan Bisseck, CB, Aarhus
    Adamo Nagalo, CB Nordsjaelland
    Jacob Christensen, CM, Nordsjaelland
    Mohamed Diamande, CM, Nordsjaelland
Oliver Antman, RW, Nordsjaelland (massive potential just yet to fully show it)
