Celtic making checks on Barnsley’s Callum Styles ahead of January

Celtic are ‘checking on’ Barnsley’s Callum Styles in their search for a new left-back, reports Alan Nixon in The Sun on Sunday (19.12.21, pg. 69).
Styles, 21, joined Barnsley from Bury midway through the 2018/19 season. Since, the Englishman has made 89 league appearances for the Tykes with his breakthrough campaign coming last time round.

Under former manager Valerien Ismael, Styles featured 44 times in the Championship, scoring four and assisting three as he proved himself to be one of the most exciting young talents in the division.


And he’s impressed again this time round.

Despite Barnsley’s struggles, Styles has made 21 Championship outings so far this season, scoring and assisting one.

But now, Nixon writes in this morning’s The Sun on Sunday that Celtic are looking at Styles ahead of the January transfer window, with the Scottish giants looking to fill a longstanding void at left-back.

A shining light…
It’s been a relatively dire season for Barnsley. Losing Ismael in the summer to West Brom, as well as former chief Dane Murphy to Nottingham Forest earlier in the season, the Tykes would bring in Markus Schopp as their new manager.


But he lasted just a few months before he was ousted. Poya Asbaghi is now the man in charge, and although he’s yet to claim his first win in charge, the performances are definitely improving.

Relegation remains a very real threat for the South Yorkshire club and losing a star player in Styles next month would prove costly to them.

He’s a fine player with plenty of potential, and a move to Celtic would no doubt prove enticing, and so Barnsley could have their backs against the wall next month.

Seen places say he is a left winger... Weird.

Looks class and only has 18 months left on his contract.

 

Just had a peruse on the Barnsley forum and it appears as though he had a great season last year as a LWB. They’ve put him in midfield this year and he’s struggled by the sounds of it. Talk of PL interest at around £8m last year but it sounds like there’s a bit more reality now he’s had an average start to the season.

 

Upgrade on Taylor surely.

Rapid which I think is important in the game today out wide and in a system like ours..

Looks versatile. Left back, left and right wing in that video. Looks to come in to centre mid comfortably and skins men for fun..

Can see why we'd be interested. Would it be a cross border fee?

Seen there was talk of him going to the PL last summer for around £8 million, but apparently he's been played further up the pitch this season and hasn't been as good, excelled at LB last year.

Could maybe get him for £4 million + a good sell on fee, looks perfect for this system.

 

Looks good on youtube - fast and skillful and his team have been relegated. Could be worth looking at.

 

If we do want him now would be the time after their relegation. He is definitely talented and versatile having played as a full back/ wing back last year and been in centre mid and on either wing this year.

His stock was very high last summer and given how poor Barnsley have been this year isn’t quite the same so could probably be picked up for a reasonable fee.

There’s a few players with a look at the relegated teams in that league.

 

Looks great, but one thing missing from that youtube montage was any crossing at all. Still, I'd take the goals over the crosses. Looks smart enough to pick the right pass, and great with the ball under pressure.

 

Sounds like he should be in a boy band.

 

As the late, great Bertie Auld would say, "Aye, but can he sing?"

 

Looks really good in that video though. Not sure if he’s LB, LWB or LW a lot of the time.
