And that’s where you’ve ignored my point. Having a divorced parent, with a loving Step Dad and Step Mum and a loving Dad and Mum still in the picture? Or having their extended family raise them as well like Grandfathers, Uncles, older Brothers etc?

I think you’re also being very simplistic and shortchanging the emotional intelligence of pretty much half the human race.

Parents who shun the divorce for the sake of the children usually grow up in animosity and it * them up majorly.

America’s attitude towards guns is disgusting.

Loads of nations across the world have suffered a single tragic event and banned weapons, no matter how many incidents there are over there it’ll never be enough to prompt proper change because there’s too many small cocked gun shaggers that don’t feel like a real man unless they own a gun. And thus those in positions of power don’t feel they have the ability to make the changes for fear of the backlash be it at the polling station or on the streets.

This 100%. Which is why banning guns isn’t the solution because it would lead to absolute chaos with people who are armed. Educating, changing values, proper investment in treating mental health (free healthcare at that or it won’t much a difference at all) and eradicating poverty are the solutions. Nothing major that.

There's no going back with the trend in America. Even if they brought a law in that banned guns it would be full on civil war. . Telling 100 million gun owners that you're coming to remove their weapons = absolute carnage.

If will never matter how many of these events there are and how many are killed...

Because they see their ridiculous constitution and it’s content as unalterable ... there will be no end to it. 230 years of it has bred a psychology that makes it a case of when and where... not if.

The 2nd amendment puts the weaponry into the hands of those with that psychology.

That's a good point. Even those who aren't right wing nutters can find themselves delving deep into the whys and the wherefores and get so caught up analysing things and offering reasons and opinions that they'll overlook the basic point of getting rid of the guns.

This can happen when * like this becomes the norm, almost an acceptance that 'ah well, these things happen.
You hit that point, the point where awful things are the norm and it's a long, long road back.

If you ban guns though, how do you get them to hand them over?

They don’t see it as unalterable, it’s been altered * loads of times. They just can’t get hard without firearms.

Ask them very nicely, making sure to use a please and a thank you.
Can't think of a single reason that wouldn't work :fear:

Not being able to answer that question suggests that we probably are past the point of no return.

Americans obsession with guns is unreal, would be ideal to lock in the gun loving mob in a big * off warehouse and let them have at it.

Won't change, gun ownership is an integral part of a lot of people's lives in USA. It's to protect against a tyrannical government getting out of control...so I don't think you will be getting guns off people anytime soon with what's going on in today's world, that's all I'll say on that matter.

I agree that semi-automatic and automatic weapons should be banned though, no need for them and they cause carnage in the wrong hands.

Things could get worse if the population didn't have guns, would be their argument. In that case, the terror that USA inflicts on some countries around the world could be inflicted on its own population. Whereas now, I think a policeman/soldier would think twice about breaking into someone's house and detaining them with no cause. They would require backup and would know their life was at risk

They won’t touch the main points , even when totally irrelevant to today’s world.... especially the right to bear arms. As pointed out above... there’d be civil war if the government tried to even reduce and restrict gun ownership.

After Dunblane ... the U.K. - with some of the worlds strictest firearms laws) had a gun amnesty and banned handguns (in private ownership) almost immediately ...

After Sandy Hook... the US had a debate about making the gun license application more rigorous, tighter background checks and then forgot all about it. Obama tried but the gun lobbyists are always ready to counter any tide against guns that makes it to congress.

I think New York State did bring in quite strict rules as the USA goes.... but then again it is the state with lowest uptake of gun ownership.

I watched ‘ Bowling for Columbine’ again a week or two ago with someone who had never seen it. Quite an eye opener (for us both) from the point of view that it was 22 years ago....

    ...and nothing has changed.

Guns will never be out of America. Big business always wins and guns is one of the biggest in the US

There are plenty of countries where gun ownership is legal and you dont see the level of murders and mass shootings they do in america.
    Why?
    Plenty of reasons.
Not enough help for those with mental illnesses.
    Poverty.
Fear.....on tv. On the news. Everyone is out to get us and we need guns to protect ourselves.
It's a right to arms which has bee twisted so much that any * can get army rifles and *
    * man...gun companies even released pink rifles for little girls.

Doesnt matter what gets done or said......money talks and guns is big business.

Little did the founding fathers know how much tragedy would be fobbed off because of the right to bear arms.

@eire4 is an Irishman living in the States for many years. Great poster as well and would be interesting to hear his take on it.
