And speaking of Jo Nesbo I just finished his thriller The Leopard another excellent Harry Hole thriller.

just started reading ‘the girl in the spiders web’ by the author they got to carry on the Larsson books David Lagercrantz, I’m not far enough in to give an opinion. Nesbos best book was‘The Redbreast’ I’ve struggled to finish some of his books due to far too many red herrings and plot twists

The thing that I like about Lehane,is even though he has his Kenzie and Gennaro series his stand alone books are also unreal. Mystic River and Shutter island.
Still give Connolly the edge though.

Think I've Nesbos first Harry Hole book kicking about somewhere. Need to give it a go. Crime fiction my favourite genre.

Used to love the Harry Bosch series too. Just feel it went on for too long.

aye great series but when Bosch was even getting too old for cold cases squad author brought in a new woman detective character to prolong it, too long as you say

I have read the original 3 by Larsson so will be interested to hear what you think. Redbrest was definitely a good one. To be fair I have liked all the Nesbo books I have read so far.

If you mean The Bat then go for it. It's set in Australia actually and is really very good. I like the international angle he brings to some of his books even though Hole is Norwegian and things are mostly set in Norway.

‘The little drummer girl’, John LeCarre, only two pages in and LeCarre has caught my interest already, no one writes spying/intelligence agencies books like him

Harry Hole... how does he get away with that?

Been trying to get into more modern sci-fi. I loved it as a kid but stopped reading it about thirty years ago. I've since read a few that seem to be very popular but most are pretty crap. The only two decent ones I've read (written this century) are The Martian and Ready Player One.

    Any suggestions?

I don't know I have never tried any of the books written by others after Larsson died. Maybe I will at some point but haven't so far.

Right now I am reading a funny and entertaining one by the Game of Thrones author George RR Martin called Tuff Voyaging which I am enjoying. My all time favourite sci fi series though is Isac Asimov's Foundation series. That is brilliant.

just finishing ‘The girl in the spider’s web’ by David Lagercrantz, continuing Stieg Larsson’s Millennium series (it says on the cover). Decent read as a novel on it’s own but not a patch on original Millennium’s series

Thanks for the heads up there on that. I imagine I will get around to reading it at some point myself but its not on my to read shelf as of yet. The original Steig Larsson trilogy was just superb. It is hard to imagine anyone could follow on at the same level.

Yeah, Asimov was great but that's old school. I'm interested mainly in books written say - after 1990. That's the stuff I'd like to catch up on.

It really surprises me how indifferent I've been to most modern sci-fi. Pretty much every other genre has improved out of sight for story-telling, inventiveness, dialogue etc (especially crime) but IMO sci-fi seems to have gone backwards.

Maybe try Greg Bear's 2 book series Eon and Eternity. I thought they were very good. Just checked and Eon was published in 1985 and Eternity 3 years later.

Finished George RR Martin's Tuff Voyaging. Really enjoyed it. A fun sci fi adventure stand alone book written well before his Game of Thrones series.
