No I'm serious. Seen Clapton three times and whilst there's no denying he's good, so many of his solos could just be lifted and dropped into another song - I think Layla was one of the few exceptions.

Judging just from the film Local Hero I'd go for Mark Knopfler. The song Going Home is one of those songs that makes you feel something by the end.

Jimi Hendrix by miles. He had everything. Especially when you listen to his live gigs.

Wouldn't disagree that Dime was one of the best guitarists in metal but for me it's a contest between Dave Mustaine and Chuck Schuldiner.

Don't overlook Robert Johnson guys just cause he wasn't around in the 60s and 70s and didn't play stadiums etc etc, fair enough alot of people may not know who he is but the influence he had on popular music can be seen in guys like Hendrix Clapton Richards Page. He deserves a mention in this thread. :)

Some other greats BB King Albert King Freddie King collectively known as the three Kings. Another great guitarist not best ever but well worth mentioning George Harrison one of my personal favourites.

Anyone familiar with a group called The Band début in 1968 with a masterpiece of a record called Music From Big Pink, the guitarist in that group Robbie Robertson is a guitar great too played alot of harmonics in his solos, One of my favourite groups well worth checking out.

Id guess those criticising Brian May are simply not fans of Queen, and are giving him no credit based on them being commercial......but the guy can most definitely play guitar!

Also, this guy, Jose Feliciano could play anything id guess was asked of him!

Lastly in this little group, a half Scottish dude called Davey Graham! Give this guy a quick look in.....its only 1.50 seconds long! Genius!

Before I opened the thread my first thought when reading the title was Tom Morrelo and was happy to see his name pop up a couple of times from other people as well.

Im a poor guitarist by any standards, so im not particularly educated in what to look for in great guitarists....other than how great they sound, but i just seen this guy in an old BBC programme from 30 years ago.
How does it seem to the experts? I think its brilliant.
