Good to see the club giving him a new deal

CELTIC are delighted to announce that 18-year-old midfielder Barry Coffey has extended his stay at Paradise until the summer of 2022. The U-19 Ireland internationalist pens his new two-year deal two years after first signing for the club in the summer of 2017.

Coffey’s hard work in Tommy McIntyre’s reserves last campaign saw him called up to the Scottish champions’ pre-season training camp in Austria and Switzerland in June. There, he played for the senior side for the first time against SC Pinkafeld.

In the weeks that followed, Coffey represented his country at the UEFA European Under-19 Championship, and is now determined to work hard to keep himself in Neil Lennon’s wider plans at club level.

Speaking at Celtic Park, Coffey said: “I’m over the moon and it’s nice to finally get the new deal over the line. I’m delighted and it’s nice to celebrate the hard work over the last two years that’s led to this point. Now, I can’t wait to get to work and continue to prove my worth at this great club.

“At the start of the season, it was an unreal experience to be involved with the first team and to play a few games in Austria. And then I was away with Ireland U-19s at the Euros, which was another fantastic experience. Now, I’ll work as hard as I can at Celtic, and can hopefully catch the gaffer’s eye again.”

This guy is going to be a star.

He’s never good enough for us.

I’ll return in three years to edit this post so I look like a proper armchair scout.

Will be interesting to see how he develops especially compared to Scott Robinson hopefully one of them at least can make the jump into becoming a regular and important first team player for us.

You won’t need to edit it, some on here swing like that from match to match, so it won’t stick out that much.

Wonder if we will re-call him in a couple of weeks and let him sit and rot for no reason.

If you’re referring to Robertson, apparently he’s going back out on loan. Club had an issue with gillingham/their manager

The manager loved having Robertson there and couldn’t praise him enough though.

Celtic had an issue with Gillingham and their management of the player apparently. Gillingham had no issue with Robertson.

Pretty sure he’s going back to another League 1 club, probably Doncaster

I don’t know how the club would have an issue when he was playing well, the fans loved him? I’m sure he played 20 odd games for them as well.

Would agree. But it's a bonus for these lads to be playing regular football in the current climate.

We sent another player to the Irish league this window too, but think he's a bit younger. Will dig it out

    Ben Wylie mate..

Coffey should be playing at a higher standard just now, bottom half of our top flight. Bit of a meh move but least he'll be playing..

That's the one, at 18 the Irish league is a decent opportunity for him. Agree on Coffey though
