That was the high point for Stokes when he was together with Hooper. Such a shame he never had the right work ethic to really get the most out of the fairly considerable talent he obviously had.

ANTHONY STOKES could be set for a return to football with hometown team Shamrock Rovers.

The former Celtic and Hibernian striker has been out of the game since leaving Livingston in September last year without playing a match.

The 32-year-old has endured a nomadic time in recent seasons following a breach of discipline that ended his third spell at Hibs in January 2018.

After stints in Greece, Iran, Turkey and Iran for a second time, he has not played competitive football for 16 months.

But the former Republic of Ireland cap is expected to play a bounce game for Shamrock on Tuesday night as manager Stephen Bradley, a former Arsenal team-mate of Stokes, considers tabling a contract offer.

Rovers currently sit joint top of the League of Ireland Premier Division and have a Champions League qualifier against Slovan Bratislava on the horizon next month.

He really did * away his career for the most part. Could have achieved so much more. Very similar to Griffiths in how much more he could have done.

FORMER Celtic star Anthony Stokes is being hunted by cops as a warrant has been issued for his arrest.

The striker, 32, was due to be sentenced at Hamilton Sheriff Court for bombarding his ex-girlfriend's father with offensive text messages

However, Stokes told his lawyer he was undergoing trials with Irish football team Shamrock Rovers and did not return to Scotland.

Sheriff Allan McKay issued a warrant for his arrest and said he did not think Stokes would return unless forced to do so by authorities.

Stokes had admitted messaging Eilidh Scott's dad George despite being under a court order banning him from contacting him.

He pled guilty last month to breaching the conditions of a non-harassment order.

But when the case called today he was not present in the dock.

His lawyer said he had travelled from Glasgow to take part in a trial with Shamrock Rovers in Ireland.

Michael Gallen, defending, said: "Mr Stokes is not present in court.

He hasn't worked in 16 months and was offered a trial with a professional football club in Dublin.

"He couldn't miss this opportunity and travelled but did have full intention of being back in court.

"He had been in Glasgow until the start of this week but that changed when the opportunity arose for him to be in employment."

Mr Gallen added: "The offending in this case concluded in February of last year during which time there has been no further offending on his part."

Sheriff McKay said: "The attitude I get is that he frankly does what he wishes and that is not acceptable to me.

He should be here and I have an explanation which holds no water.

"He pled guilty and was released on bail and he has now left the country in breach of bail.

"He pled guilty and was released on bail and he has now left the country in breach of bail.

"He is not here in breach of his bail conditions and I'm not at all sure that he will come back unless required to do so by some sort of authority so to do that I'm issuing a warrant for his arrest

In 2019 Stokes admitted a stalking campaign where he bombarded Miss Scott with a string of abusive messages that saw him send 100 texts a day on WhatsApp and email.

He labelled her a '*', a 'slag' and a '*', turned up at her home in Shotts, Lanarkshire, late at night and demanded to know her whereabouts.

The campaign of abuse lasted between July 2018 and February 2019.

Earlier this year he was placed on an anti-domestic abuse course at the same court and placed under supervision for two years for offences linked to Miss Scott.

Stokes won seven trophies in six seasons at Parkhead and scored twice in Hibs' 3-2 Scottish Cup win over Rangers in 2016.

He played a behind-closed-doors game for Shamrock Rovers earlier this week.

The thing is, a lot of people would give anything to have a career like he has had. Playing for a club as big as ours, European nights, silverware every year, being capped for your country and being the star man in a Hibs side who won their first Scottish Cup in 114 years.

However, for a guy who had the clear natural ability he had, you are right, he could’ve and should’ve been so much more but he just never wised up and realised that and ultimately it’s too late and he’s out of chances.

No question in the grand scheme of things he has some massive career highlights to look back on from his time at Celtic and as you say playing such a big role in Hibernian ending their Scottish Cup drought. But he should have been so much more with his talent. If he had of got his head screwed on he could have been a big name in Celtics history. Easily should have been in the 100+ goalscorer club as an example. Instead he finished on 76 goals for us. For Ireland he only ever played 9 times and never scored that says it all right there. For both Celtic and Ireland not saying he should have been a great but certainly should and could have been someone who put up very significant numbers if he had of been able to get his act together for longer which sadly he just could not do.

Anthony Stokes arrested and returned to Scotland after evading police for over a year
The 33-year-old footballer had been wanted for failing to appear at Hamilton Sheriff Court for sentencing last year for bombarding his ex-girlfriend with offensive text messages.

FUGITIVE footie ace Anthony Stokes was dragged back to Scotland today - a year after a warrant was issued for his arrest.

The ex Celtic star is set to finally face justice for bombarding his ex partner’s elderly dad with texts.

He was lifted in Northern Ireland and flown back to Scotland.

Stokes, 33, landed at Dundee Airport where he was smuggled into a security van with officials attempting to hide the shamed former striker.

An onlooker said: “He came off the plane with a small escort.

“He didn’t come through the public doors for arrivals but was hurried through a side door to an unmarked white van being driven by a female security woman.

“The driver manoeuvred the vehicle onto the pavement and close to the doors so people couldn’t see him.

“Two men guarded both sides and Stokes was taken through the doors and into the back seats before he was whisked away.”

Stokes was arrested by Police Service of Northern Ireland officers at the request of Scottish cops.

He was then flown back on the LoganAir flight from Belfast at around 4pm. He was flanked by workers from security firm GEOAmey which transports people appearing in court.

The former Ireland hero was wearing plush trainers and his right wrist was cuffed to a burly guard while two others man-marked the former goal-getter.

Other passengers in the departures hall were oblivious to the cloak and dagger return of the ex ace for the past year.

His latest arrest comes a month after Police Scotland confirmed they’re still looking for the troubled ace who was thought to be in Ireland.

A warrant for the arrest of the 33-year-old was issued at Hamilton Sheriff Court in June last year after he failed to turn up to learn his fate for bombarding his ex-girlfriend’s dad with offensive text messages.

The warrant was granted by Sheriff Allan Mackay, who told how he did not think the player would return unless forced to do so.

Mr Mackay said: “He pled guilty and was released on bail and he has now left the country in breach of bail.

He is not here in breach of his bail conditions. I’m not at all sure he will come back unless required to do so by some sort of authority. So I’m issuing a warrant for his arrest.”

Since then he has posted snaps of him in a bar while wearing expensive trainers and a Rolex watch.

He admitted messaging George Scott, the father of his ex Eilidh, despite a court order banning him from contacting him.

Stokes was at the Hoops from 2010-16 and won the Scottish Cup with Hibs in 2016. However, he is currently without a club.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “A 33-year-old man has been arrested in connection with outstanding warrants.

“He is due to appear at Hamilton Sheriff Court on Monday, 18 July, 2022.”

Obviously we don't know the facts yet but this makes him far worse than Griffiths if true.

EX-CELTIC striker Anthony Stokes has been charged after cops seized nearly £4,000 of suspected cocaine in a car after a police chase today.

The footballer, 34, was arrested after the motor he was alleged to be in is said to have sped off after being approached by cops in the Crumlin area of his hometown Dublin.

Officers raced after the vehicle and seized a pile of white powder from the motor.

An Irish police spokesman said: “Gardaí arrested two men (aged in their 30s) in the early hours of Friday morning, 6th January 2023 in relation to incidents of dangerous driving in Dublin 12.

“A quantity of drugs was also recovered from the vehicle.

“Both men were detained in Crumlin Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 and have been charged in relation to this.
