He plays for the same club, so I can sort of understand the confusion.

 

Been saying for years we should make more use of the winter window for players, signing * in the summer and then expecting them to get us into the CL a short while later was just stupid.

 

It's difficult to not overpay in January though. Teams half way through their seasons etc. We're being smart with it under Ange, singing players from summer leagues in January. With the exception of O'Riley who played in a lower league so was always cheap.

Getting quality players from European leagues in January is hard though, hence all the January loans we've seen over the years

 

The only players you are likely to get in this window is from countries that play the calendar year rather than August to May or players that are generally struggling. The summer has players with a year or contract expired, so bargains are often available. Most of our big sales will be in the summer too and you have to know who you will be replacing and how much you will have to do it with based on player sales.

I agree the club were never pro-active enough in January, where we could have taken advantage of Scandanavian leagues at the very least, until recently but you can't make it your main window. Us adding 4 players, 3 of whom were regular starters in January I think will be a rarity. If it happens this winter I think it's because of potential player sales.

 

January transfer window is notoriously difficult, because teams don’t want to lose their best players in the middle of the season. Matt O’Riley aside, who forced his move, Ange has got players in who’s just finished their season in January and it’s not a factor of needing to overpay, because the team you’ve bought a player off of needs to replace an important player halfway through the season.
