As to humour, its cultural also many times. What you might say as humour may not be understood initially , or be misunderstood by others.

Case in point, in my 20s I had begun dating a lass named Julie, who I used to refer to as Jules, for short. At one point we were going to go out one night and she had invited me home to have a meal with her whole family before we left. They were very nice and welcoming. The father was a carpenter and had two of his fingers missing from accidents.

As we sat to eat and me trying to be 'clever' and relaxed and pleased to be there, I said ' Thank you for inviting me tonight, I have been looking forward to sitting down with the family Jules' and smiling - a play on words on my part, not knowing at the time what that really meant in Oz. The family looked at me like I was an alien, Julie was flushed red with shock. I still did not understand their reaction.

Pretty sure they knew I did not understand what I said, and nothing was said and they were very good about it.
It was only after some time that I twigged how silly and inappropriate I had been in saying it. I still have a little laugh even today when I think back on this.
