Was just thinking - how on earth are Ajax selling players for £89m

A team that are not much better than us and playing in a league which is only marginally better than ours. In fact the second best team in Holland were quite a way behind the second best team in Scotland (pains to admit but the Huns were well in control).

So it makes me think - what on earth are we going to sell this fella for when the time comes? £50m + with a decent CL showing?

 

Think they've very much established themselves as a selling club who constantly scout, develop and improve young players. We've been on that path for the last 10 or so years but they had a good reputation of that even back when we played them in 2013 so they can gradually demand more money with each sale who then went on to big things. It helps when the likes of Ibra, Eriksen, Suarez etc went on to world class levels.

If we can keep making CL and our players do well against these mega bucks clubs, and your Tierney's, Dembele's and Ajer's reach VVD levels then we can start asking for bigger sums for a Jota or a Jura.

 

Revenue only dwarfs us through the sales they get domestic tv deal maybe better but their cl revenue is shared amongst the league

Ajax have consistently produced World Class players. It’s why it’s so important the guys we sell do well, no coincidence we could only get £12m plus add on’s for Van Dijk, and £25m for Kieran Tierney after Van Dijk established himself as possibly the worlds best.

 

Yup, which is why I find it baffling when some fans say they don't care how players that leave get on (or sometimes even actually hope they fail) once they are away. It is very much in our best interests for them to do well, both in terms of possible sell on fees as well as increasing our market value when it comes to selling players in the future.

 

Definitely mate, even the guys I don’t really have a lot of time for (not exactly dislike) like Stuart Armstrong I really like seeing doing well because of that.

 

Yeah, Christie is another like that. I don't want to watch them, but still hope they do well.

 

Aye Neymar’s 2017 transfer * up a lot of things but teams with track records of success generally get more.

 

Ajax have only started getting the mega money they get now since that champions league run in 2017. De Ligt, De Jong, Ziyech, Van Den Beek, Dest and Dohlberg all made them £270m from that run and you can't say that any of them have really went and set the world alight. Even then, the guys who have been sold for Mega Money are De Jong, De Ligt and Antony. All of them were above £80m.

Before that champions league run, their highest sale was £35m. Davison Sanchez to Spurs. Then £28m they got from Napoli for Milik. It wasn't that much more than our record sale.

They're a phenomenally well run club but let's be honest. Erik Ten Hag knew that he would struggle to get players so he's went and paid well over the odds for guys at Ajax just now. £135m on 2 players is crazy, even for them. Some of their other players have moved on for relatively decent fees this window, Haller was £30m and Gravenberch was £20m. It's only been Man Utd that have paid the mega money for their players this month. Had they got De Jong, they would never have bought Antony.

It's clear that's the sort of model we should be taking. However, we've been slowly building it up. Huge difference in both our record arrivals and our record sales though.

On Jota, he is not worth less than £40m right now. He's on a long contract. His goals and assists are excellent. If Nottingham Forest want to spend £42.5m on Morgan Gibbs-White after a decent 6 months in the championship, we should be asking for similar money for Jota. It's up to Celtic to use it wisely. Ajax always have plans. They know who they're going for if players leave for the money THEY want. Planning is needed to make the model successful.

 

That goal is up there with the Larsson chip for me. World class
