Finished Gene Kerrigan's Little Criminals. This was my first Gene Kerrigan novel and I will definitely be back for more. A brilliant thriller crime drama that I absolutely loved from start to finish. A great story about a small time Dublin criminal who dreams big his Garda nemesis and a little twist to it all.

Always came away from that story feeling sorry for sonny black the person who the Bonannos actually whacked (Michael madsens character) not Ruggerio in the movie for introducing Brasco to the mob

Finished Ken Bruen's Sanctuary. It is a short read but another outstanding read in his Jack Taylor Galway mystery series. Rapidly becoming a big Ken Bruen fan.

Finished John Connolly's A Wolf in Winter another great addition to his Charlie Parker thriller and suspense series. His mix of myth, legend and the supernatural is brilliantly done alongside the thriller and suspense nature of the book.

Just finished the Frankie Boyle and Kevin Bridges novels. Both better than I was expecting. Frankie Boyle's is a crime fiction satire set in post-referendum Glasgow, Bridges' is a more serious comedy/drama about a college lad with dreams of being a writer and a successful author/actor from his area who returns home to look after his sister.

    The Road by Cormac McCarthy.

I’d say I enjoyed it overall.

I known it’s cliche where this book’s concerned, but it may be the bleakest thing I’ve ever read - although it’s not entirely without hope. I’d previously been spoiled on a couple moments (a particularly infamous scene towards the end of the novel and a vague idea of the ending) but it didn’t really negatively impact my experience of the book all that much.

It’s definitely a much more straightforward story than Blood Meridian, which has its pros and cons, but I definitely enjoyed, or at least had a better grip of, McCarthy’s writing style here. What I would say though is that while The Road maybe has, at least in terms of pure numbers, more memorable ‘moments’ or scenes, it never quite reaches the heights of some the latter parts of Blood Meridian for me (which I still think about from time to time).

There isn’t really any grand plot, at times it can even seem a bit overly mundane/repetitive (which is kind of the point), and lacks traditional characters arcs, but I found pretty engaging from beginning to end - which I suppose is testament to McCarthy’s quality as a writer. In terms of invoking dread or tension, The Road is almost in a league of its own. I don’t think I’ve ever felt as anxious reading a book as I did with many of the encounters the main characters had during this book.

I’ve gave up on him mainly due to the supernatural bullshit he increasingly uses, pity as Louis and Angel are two great characters

Just finished this bad boy. Pretty easy read about a Korean Zen monk's view on Zen. He has a very relaxed approach and it's quite funny in places. Basically to be happy..stop thinking..have no mind...go straight!

I can see how some would not like that angle. Doesn't bother me though. For sure it does become more of a feature as the series moves along.

That is true there was even a supernatural element right from the first book in the series. Again for me I am fine with it and have really enjoyed all the books so far.

Best thriller writer going. All his books are quality. Only one who comes close is Lehane.

Lehane is streets ahead, his books, The Wire, Boardwalk Empire a genius who can turn his hand to any sphere of writing

Tend to agree with you about Connolly. I have not read as much Lehane but he is good too. I would throw in Jo Nesbo as another one I like a lot. Steig Larsson's thriller trilogy was brilliant too before he died.
