Defenders usually take a bit longer to develop, I think big Mick was 23 when he started to make regular appearances only making a handfull or so before that and he became club captain. Welsh definitely has things to work on but at 22 I think some folk are pretty harsh on him, I think in the next couple of years he will develop better being a part of the squad. I think he has a future at the club

Thank * Ange actually sees Welsh for how he has been this pre-season and not like the usual moaners who think Welsh has not drastically improved in 12 months despite how evident it is he has.

They can * off for 3.5 million euros, Welsh will be a 1-club man or we will sell him him on for 3x that figure in the future.

Comfortably our best defender in pre-season, that doesn’t mean much, but it means he’s taking lessons to heart and pushing as much as he can to improve. Ange see’s him as part of the first team and doesn’t want to lose him, I just hope he gets enough games to keep improving. He starts tomorrow definitely anyway I think.

Ange Postecoglou pinpoints Celtic player who has 'gone up a level'

Celtic’s squad restructuring under Ange Postecoglou has undeniably squeezed opportunities for the club’s home-grown players.

Yet there is one such performer that the Celtic manager believes is rising to the challenge of not allowing that to happen. A player that isn’t much talked about when considering the options available to the Australian.

With Carl Starfelt a week away from returning to contention for a central defensive slot, Stephen Welsh will operate alongside Camaeron Carter-Vickers as Celtic open up their title defence at home to Aberdeen. The Scotland under-21 will do so despite the fact that Moritz Jenz and Christopher Jullien could be deployed. Welsh’s possession of the jersey – at least for now – is testament to his progress in the past year, according to the Celtic manager. Progress that has been noted elsewhere, with the 22-year-old linked with loan moves to Udinese and Toulouse.

“Welshy has shown a lot of growth,” said Postecoglou. “I expect that from all the players. He has come back for pre-season and worked really hard through it. Because of our defensive situation we have not had too many options at centre-back so he and Cam have played in the majority of games and his performances are improving all the time.

“We are challenging him all the time to take his game to another level. That’s the nature of the beast, you have to keep improving whether you are established or not.

“Welshy has been with the club for a very long time. Last year was his first significant year as a first-team member and he has come back determined to make more of an impact. He wants to take his game to another level and he has embraced that challenge.

“He has definitely gone up a level from last year and hopefully he knows that we will try to get more out of him.”

Honest to *, a don’t know why a load of our fans seem to have it in for him, he’s a good player. Got a lot more potential as well, glad Ange see’s it.

    Good header.

I still think he's slack on the ball though at times. There's a lot to work on with him but suppose I need to remember he's 22.

Don't think anyone on here wants him to fail ffs.

He's a decent player. Good header and played some decent passes. Also played a couple of really poor passes and lost a few aerial duels.

    He's fine.

That’s weird man I love his passing, dead positive. Maybe needs to play it safe a wee bit more often but he’s been class.

Think he's been good but as Sean says he's given it away a few times and one of them it was a really dangerous break.

He's a bit slow to decide what to do at times for me. Again as I said though he's only 22. Fine for the squad to continue learning.
