To of the most important books in my life so far, read them both at formative times in my life and they made a huge impact. Hunger is one of the main reasons I went back to study literature at uni. Also absolutely love Mysteries by Hamsun.

Stop Thinking Start Living - Saved me from topping myself 17 years ago when my life fell apart. £3 well spent (I paid £5!)

Bob Mortimer's autobiography is * hilarious.

It's quite moving at times and goes a lot deeper than just him and Vic Reeves being mad *.

My favourite serious book is probably still The Autobiography of Malcolm X.

I used to be a keen reader when I was younger, but now all I read are autobiographies and even at that it’s really rare.

Podcasts and interviews are where I’m at just now. I wouldn’t say they are necessarily better than books, just more convenient, you can be doing other stuff whilst listening to a brilliant podcast.

I do miss getting stuck in to a good read though. Good for getting yourself ready for your kip as well rather than watching TV or having your eyes on your phone.

My fav. Non fiction is probably Stalingrad by Anthony Beevor.
My fav. Fiction is The Throwback by Tom Sharpe. His two South African books are also very good Riotious Assembly and Indecent Exposure

One of the best autobiography's I've ever read was big John Hartson's book. Not for the football side of his life but for his battle with cancer. I was in tears at the end. Brilliant book.

As I'm really into the whole UFO/ALIEN thing, I read a book by a guy called David Jacobs. The book is called The Threat. It's about the Alien hybrid programme and how they're already here living among us, just waiting for the moment to take over the world. If you believe in the Alien theory, It's a scary read.

So, six and a half years on, how is the OP's writing career going?

@PaddyJamieson - what flavour of publishing?

I run Taproot Press (yes, that's me with the mad ginger hair in case you look us up, though it's significantly more tamed now...) and work with Publishing Scotland. So trade publishing really, though I involve myself with the academic side of things too.

Wow, tough gig. Best of luck with it - looks like some decent stuff being done.

I've been involved with two small publishers, both of whom went to the wall. About to be published by another small un... You'd think they'd learn.
