NEW Bhoy Alexandro Bernabei says meeting Argentina legend Diego Maradona as a kid will inspire him for LIFE.

The left-back, 21, yesterday completed his £3.75million move from Lanus to Celtic on a five-year deal.




His old club then published a picture of a young Bernabei alongside late, great World Cup-winning hero Maradona.

And Bernabei — who looks set to be followed in the door imminently by £6.4m winger Jota — said: “First of all, Diego was a world champion.

“I had a chance to meet him when there was a friendly between Lanus and Gimnasia.

“For me it was just really, really meaningful to be able to meet him. For my career and also for my life, for all Argentinians.”




Bernabei will be the first Argentinian to pull on the Hoops.

Asked if he was proud to follow the likes of Maradona and Lionel Messi to Europe, he said: “I wouldn’t make that comparison.

“I don’t think I’m at the stature of the best, like Messi and Maradona.
“However, I would really like to follow in their footsteps in terms of playing in Europe for as long as I can.

“Being the first Argentinian at Celtic means I would like to open the door for a lot more Argentinian players to come to the club.




“My family and my friends will all know about Celtic.”

Bernabei didn’t think twice about leaving his family behind to travel halfway across the world.




He has immediately targeted title glory and can’t wait to play in the Champions League.

He added: “The first thought I had when I heard about interest was that I was very hopeful it was something that would come to fruition.
“I was really looking forward to playing for Celtic. I didn’t need to speak to anyone.


The transfer was going to happen and I had already made up my mind that was I was going to come.

“I think the Champions League is one of the most important competitions in the world.




And I’m going to give it all for Celtic.

“First of all, I would like to become champion of Celtic.

“After that, I want to enjoy all the years that I have at the club.
“It was a dream of mine to come and play in Europe.

“It’s happened that I come to a big club, a huge club like Celtic.
“I didn’t think twice. Family and friends was not an issue.

“I think the Celtic fans are going to see a player who is aggressive, that has a lot of personality, who always gives his best for the team and will defend the Celtic players.




I spoke to the manager and he made me feel very comfortable.

“I am very grateful to him and the club. I’m going to learn a lot and grow as a player.”

 

Seems a top guy. I reckon he's gonna be a sensational signing.

 

Very impressive first press conference. Looks absolutely buzzing to be here and comes across very sincere and hungry to succeed.

Like how he said he didn't have to speak to anyone once he heard of our interest - just wanted it done. He also didn't even think twice about leaving Argentina and his friends and family behind to come here. For a 21 year old, that's some set of baws.

Ange is really identifying certain characters and it's blatantly obvious. It's so refreshing to be honest.

 

That’s the first thing I noticed about him, how grateful and excited he is to be here. The second thing I noticed was how his face lit up when talking about playing in front of 60,000 Celtic fans. This kid will do anything to be successful at Celtic.

 

He also waxed lyrical about Miku if memory serves me right.

Aye mate, he was a big Mark Wilson fan back in the day.

 

I was genuinely embarrassed.

 

I hope he's grown a few inches since having that photo taken. I know that there have been numerous excellent players who have been on the small side but I still think height is the one thing our team still lacks and our new signing is quite small. I think its imperative therefore that we sign some big tall defensive player who can defend high balls and set pieces which has been a bit of Achilles Heel for us at times

 

He did that mate, he also about that he wasn’t 100% sure the league would suit him though.

Which is probably spot on, look at his performance against Barca it’s clear he was a player, the league bullied him too much for him to cope though.
