The best one I’ve ever heard for bizarreness was Riyad Mahrez, on a trial for St Mirren, thinking no way I’m not doing this and halfway through training jumping a fence, stealing a bike and doing the bunk :56::56:

Neil Lennon at Hibs as well, brought Jermaine Pennant up on a * 6 week trial, at the end of it said he wanted him but needed to spend money elsewhere and got offered a contract less than a grand a week :56:

I used to blame the board about those * up but now after reading what Juninho had to say I think O’Neil kyboshed then after the David Fernandez signing I do t think he liked those type of players in his squad good manager still had his faults

Paul Lambert travelling about Holland and Germany with an agent, going on trial with different clubs, before Dortmund taking him is quite amazing.

The case of Ali Dia is a funny one.

Around 1996 George Weah (who was world player of the year at the time) started phoning around clubs in England asking if they would be interested in signing his cousin Ali Dia, who he had played with at PSG and for the internationals. A good few teams said no, West Ham I think and a couple others. Until Graeme Souness at Southampton got the call and he agreed to take him on simply on the basis that he was George Weah's cousin. He got a one month contract

The Southampton players had him sussed immidiately as he was absolutely shocking in training. Even at that though he made his debut coming on as a sub in a Premiership game where it became apparant that he had zero talent whatsoever and was shockingly bad. He was promptly subbed back off again. It turned out the guy had been at it the whole time. It was him on the phone calling round the clubs pretending to be George Weah and George Weah didnt even know the guy. He dissappeared after that game and was never seen or heard of again

What did you call the absolute clown that sat in QPR's car park waiting on an offer to be made by them to West Brom only for there to be no offer made and having to drive back to his club? That was hilarious at the time.

Not a 'best' one, but undoubtedly the most notorious one, has to be Judas.

Johnston left Celtic to go play in France for a few years, but told Roy Aitken while they were both on International duty for Scotland that he wanted to rejoin the Hoops. One thing lead to another, and went on to agree terms and signed a letter of intent, photo with the scarf held aloft before the media. and a week later signed for R******. :47:

There is more to it, about how his agent (a fervent R****** man) owned his contract and not Nantes (the club he was playing for) as well as the old Board all involved in the screw up, but even still the whole thing was pretty stunning and left a lot of resentment and bad taste at the time, which remains so to this day.

First one that popped to mind was Tevez and Mascherano rocking up at Upton Park on deadline day in a transfer that they wouldn't reveal any details of. Obviously they later got done for the dodgy deals. It wouldn't be so shocking for young stars like that to join a team like West ham now, but at the time it seemed crazy.

Bebe to Man Utd was a bit of a weird one. Signed by Guimaraes for pennies and off to United in the same window for €9M. Apparently was homeless not too long before and living in shelters. Complete unknown.

Obviously pretty much a flop at United but fair play to the guy he's managed to carve out a career for himself at Rayo Vallecano

Pretty sure Alex Ferguson had never seen him play either. Really strange one.

That was when Walter Smith got a gig on Alex Ferguson's backroom staff at Old Trafford.

As much as I didnt like the guy for what he stood for - black armband when Billy Wright got killed etc. And also for what he went around bragging about in the rangers pubs about what he said to Pierre Van Hooijdonk. But I simply couldnt have wished cancer on him. Nobody ever deserves that and I mean it....nobody deserves that
