Depp Vs Heard.

They resent anybody who changes their culture. I saw one American argue that gun laws in the UK post Dunblane changed nothing as there had been no school shootings before. Just seemed * that another country changed laws to make sure it didn't happen again.

My wife and I went on an American cruise a few years back. The thing that concerned us was the prospect of being surrounded by loud, fat Americans all waving their flags and shouting about guns and manifest destiny but, to our considerable surprise, the Americans were mainly intelligent, sophisticated and lots of fun.

Until we asked about their medical system (this was during the Obamacare years). Suddenly they got defensive and angry and referred to the Australian, Canadian or British systems as socialist - and therefore bad. If you think they're loopy about guns, try talking to them about their lunatic medical system where comparatively well off people go bankrupt if they get cancer and want it treated.

And the truly bizarre aspect of this? Even the poor people who would most benefit from an Oz/British style medical system vote against it because they aspire to getting it free as part of an employment package.

The further we dug into this attitude the truth, as we perceived it, was that they see it as a form of class entitlement to have medical cover provided by an employer. They didn't want others to have that entitlement, and the ones that didn't have it aspired to getting it but as an entitlement - not as a public right that all enjoyed.

Go figure...

 

It's the mentality that socialist is bad, but a public health are system isn't socialist. You can still have private health care on top of state funded medical care. How would these people feel is suddenly they no longer got state funded schools. You poor and/or can't afford school fees, well tough * you can home school them. Things like health are a human right not socialist.

I want to laugh but it's so so sad.

 

My usual response is: "Well I think your military is socialist because you spend so much of your tax dollars on it."

These are the choices we make as a society. Australia has a comparatively small military but arguably the best health system in the world.

 

Your normal response is technically * stupid but is peak annoying for American patriots.

Regarding the health system, I grew up in Australia and I can remember it being absolutely amazing anytime we needed it, came over here it was more hassle, but the older I’ve got it’s became clear it’s got worse and worse, and funding has been stripped away bit by bit. Not a coincidence.

But I’ve also had private contracts to the NHS in my working life and the frivolous spending is insane, and they know it because if they don’t spend that budget, it gets cut.

 

My normal response uses exactly the same logic they use about our health.

I've noticed, over the course of my life, that people really hate having their hypocrisy exposed to them. Especially when that hypocrisy involves uber-enthusiastic flag waving.

 

My uneducated opinion will be jury verdict is to award depp $7mill as some sort of poetic justice
