As good as he's been this season, I still don't think we're getting the best out of him as the deepest midfielder. I know domestically in most games we're fine playing him there, but for europe we need a proper DM and give him a bit more freedom further up the park.

JUST after the final whistle at Celtic Park last Sunday, skipper Callum McGregor gathered his team-mates and spoke passionately in the Huddle.

The Scotland star, having seen the Premiership leaders pegged back by Rangers, urged one last push for the title.

Hours later, the midfield maestro was lauded by his fellow professionals as PFA Scotland’s Player of the Year.

Now he’s spoken of his pride at following some close pals and valued team-mates in collecting the prize — and how those next to him in the Huddle helped him land it.

Hoops skipper CalMac, who turns 29 next month, said: “It’s a really proud moment for me. To be voted Player of the Year by your peers is a great feat.

“There are so many impressive names who have won this award in the past

To join that list is something I’m very proud of. It’s lovely to win this award. There’s no hiding from that.

“It’s a nice feeling, especially when it’s your fellow professionals who are voting.

“For me as captain, the team prizes like the League Cup obviously mean more.

“But to have personal awards on top of that shows you’ve had a good season

Since McGregor’s first-team debut at Celtic in 2014, he’s applauded Stefan Johansen, Leigh Griffiths, Scott Sinclair, Scott Brown and pal James Forrest as they stepped on stage to lift the award.

Last Sunday, he saw Liel Abada crowned this season’s Young Player of the Year, and Ange Postecoglou honoured as Manager of the Year.

McGregor played his own small role in each of his team-mates’ successes and hailed the champions-elect for helping him.

He added: “We’ve had a great season, and we can now go and finish it off in the next couple of weeks.

To have many new players come in, and to build a new team with so many involved in the end-of-season awards, is fantastic for the club.

“It shows that everyone is moving in the right direction.

And there’s still a lot to come from this group. That’s an exciting thing as well.

“To be one of the more experienced ones and have the captain’s armband brings more responsibility. But it’s something I relish, having that additional responsibility and having that impact on the team and the lads.

“The boys have been first class with me as well in terms of taking the right direction and listening to what I’ve got to say. It brings the best out in me.”

McGregor picked up his award just hours after the 1-1 draw with Gers.

KEEPUP’s David Davutovic sat down with Celtic captain Callum McGregor to discuss the impact Ange Postecoglou has had at the club.

Celtic skipper Callum McGregor hailed the impact of a stellar recruitment campaign and the turbo-charging of a new era, after a 31-point swing from last season that leaves the Hoops on the verge of the Scottish title.

McGregor, 28, admitted he knew little about Ange Postecoglou upon his appointment, but is now singing his praises after transforming a club that was in crisis.

And Celtic’s domestic feats are even more remarkable considering they’ve charged down and overtaken a quality Rangers side, that’s knocked off Borussia Dortmund, Red Star Belgrade, Braga and RB Leipzig en route to the Europa League final.

Scotland international McGregor was one of the few remaining stars from last season, as Odsonne Edouard, Kristoffer Ajer, Ryan Christie, Mohamed Elyounoussi and Scott Brown raced for the exit door after falling 25 points short of Rangers, along with several executives.

Postecoglou handed McGregor, a Hoops youth product and former ball boy, the captaincy as the rebuild commenced, and after some testing early times, Celtic can sew up the title as early as this weekend, as they host Hearts on Saturday before Rangers host Dundee United on Sunday.

“It’s been great so far, we’ve got this last little period to finish it off. Would be great to seal the championship along with the League Cup, would be a great season for the club,” McGregor said.

“A really poor season for the club last year, on the back of the pressure and expectation of the 10 (titles) in a row thing. It was a big job in the summer with the manager coming in, so many players leaving.

It was almost like the end of an era for the team that had been together and so successful to that point. Like anything, when it’s the end of an era, the uncertainty of what’s coming next puts people on edge, in terms of, can you be successful again or is it going to take a few years to build with so many new players?

“The gaffer’s come in, he’s done a brilliant job. His recruitment’s been fantastic, he’s recruited for the style of football he wants to play, and then (for) the players to come in and produce so many big performances in the first season, a lot of them coming far and wide (from) all over the world and come in and fit into this group. They’ve done fantastically well.”

While midfielder McGregor admitted his game had gone to another level, he revealed that the new signings had raised the bar.

The volume of change was underlined in last week’s 1-1 draw with Rangers, with eight of Celtic’s first XI and 10 of the 15 players who featured joining since Posteocoglou took charge.

They also account for the top four scorers (Kyogo Furuhashi, Liel Abada, Giorgos Giakoumakis and Jota, accounting for 57 goals in all competitions), which is telling, after the departures of Edouard, Elyounoussi and Christie (46 goals).

“The manager’s style suits players like myself that like to have lots of touches on the ball, nice small passes, play one and two touch, connect the game properly. The team’s always connected, the structure of the team is always really good and that gives us success within the game,” he sad.

“He’s not asking anybody to do anything outrageous. It’s just touch pass, touch pass. He’s always on about that touch pass tempo, and as quickly as you can move the ball through the pitch then it gives the opposition less chance to recover. It seems simple but it’s effective.

“For us to have so many technically good players, and to have a manager who wants to do that and wants us to play that way, that’s the reason we’ve been so successful.

“It (Postecoglou’s impact) has been huge. Just on his recruitment, he has a style and identity as a manager. In football you have to recruit for the style you want to play. He’s done that brilliantly well.

“He’s come in with that authority, he’s been very clear in the message he wants in the message from the players transferring onto the pitch how we behave on the training ground, how we train. And come matchday, he demands we play our best football on that day. And then the next game (again).

“He’s very demanding, but for footballers, that’s what you want. You want a coach to always challenge you and make you play on the edge, and always make you play your best football and that’s the impact he’s had coming into the group.

“He’s always kept the players on edge, he’s kept rotating the team, which means the performances are always at a high level because when you’re in the team, you want to stay in the team. And the guys that are training really hard are then pushing the starting boys and that’s how the standard continues to raise.

“He’s had a huge impact on the club.”

McGregor said Postecoglou’s style has brought out the best in him and others, including Aussie attacker Tom Rogic, who netted just twice last season in 31 games (he has six this season including goal of the year).

“He’s a top guy, top footballer as well. Great personality. I’ve known him for best part of eight to nine years now and we’ve had some amazing times together on and off the pitch. He’s a great character.

He’s been hugely important this season in terms of being that bridge between that manager. He’s helped drip feed the message, always keeping us (informed) on what he wants, the small details he wants to see around the training ground.

“Tom’s been hugely important for us this season and what we’re doing

Didn't get a goal or even a shot off. But was at the heart of nearly everything in that midfield. Magnificent.

I think we can all agree that he was the one player who looked to take the game to them when we were trailing and looking lost in first half - that is the mark of a capatain. He is not Scott Brown and doesnt try to be Broony. We nned more like him , KT and Ralston

Hey , Young Team .. where are you, time to step up, There are hundreds of thousands of supporters who will back you.
