Rodgers didn't change his style in Europe, don't think Ange will either. Unfortunately that's going to lead to some disastrous results for us. All out attack will work against a few teams not many.

Nah. Ange changed against sevco rubbis huns, at there place and won. That day showed me we are capable of defence. We're learning, but even with the best defence in the world in the champions league you can get some shocker results.

Because he never had the players to.

It can’t be a coincidence that all our managers are seemingly reluctant to change systems in Europe.

As folk have pointed out, you couldn’t play defensively with our current midfield - so Ange will have no other option, unless he gets backed.

As one of the posters has said on here, Ange's first season is usually a bit harem scarem so, let's just wait till we see who the big man recruits in the summer and that might give us an indication on what sort of tactics he will use in Europe

Irony of winning the league and banking 40 million is the Huns will be banking a total of 20 if they win Europa + 40 for champions League access..

Playing field well and truly evened.

Is it not the case the CL money will be split between both clubs? It's not quite 40m, that figure includes prize money for winning games, gate receipts etc. Think the 'access' figure is closer to 30m, so 15m each?

We will have to share the tv money and undoubtedly they will fleece their fans for ticket money to make up for smaller stadium

Assuming the board back home to actually strengthen the team

It’s a legitimate question :giggle1: 10 year old team has outdone our entire last 18 years of European football in the space of 2 seasons

Tv pool is only £5-£6 million for Scotland, so it's not that big of deal. The 10 year coefficient is probably more important, which is why we won't get £40 million from UEFA, either way it's more like £20-£25 million

Benfica and Ajax, will get about £40 million, however, because they are higher ranked in coefficient

Im not so sure next season will be as many bells as whistles as we think. We might have a new manager but he is still relying on board backing to make any progress. IF and its a rather big IF we manage to sign CCV and Jota :78:that will take anywhere between 10-18 million depending on what media rag you read and normally for our club that is the budget gone. Maybe if we get some CL wonga they might spend a extra 5 million.....or we might manage to sell some squad fat but even then. I cant see next season being anything different to this one...tight nervy season hoping they drop more points than us. As for the CL......eeeeek:poster_oo.

If the board has any gumption about them we will spend big again this summer. In fairness this is the second post Lawell season, I don’t like that another Lawell has got a job with us now but it goes to tell me further that we’re are well on our way to being a “city group “ club, we are already in all but actual ownership. Hopefully if that was to happen we’d show some real ambition

Huns making the EL final will surely be a wake up call to the board. I think we're in for a huge battle next season on the domestic front. And Ange will want progress in Europe too. So now is the time to push on!

Given the way money is now in football to get a good run in Europe we will need to do a number of things.

The first is stop giving away cheap goals, and be organised our domestic success has been partly down to not conceding many but in Europe we concede far too many cheap goals through basic errors. We seldom make teams in Europe do anything special to score against us.

We need to be better at set pieces at both ends of the pitch, against better teams margins and opportunities are far smaller and either conceding from corners or not being able to capitalise on our own costs us a lot.

At the other end we need to be far more clinical, it’s something they have done in their games to get to where they have. We miss far too many good chances, or waste far too many promising scenarios. See the last two league games from around 25-45 minutes in both we should have buried them but only had a one goal lead in both.

In Europe Alkmaar at home at 2-0, Betis away at 2-0, Leverkusen away at 2-1, Leverkusen at home throughout the game, and Ferencvaros away throughout the second half. Bodo Glimt at home early on and at 1-0 to them. When up against opponents similar or better than you, you can’t afford to be wasteful.

Lastly it cannot be denied that luck in various forms comes into European runs for clubs outside the big leagues. Luck of the draw for one thing you couldn’t have hand picked easier opponents than Red Star and Braga from the stages of the competition they drew them. You also then sometimes rely on other teams having good fortune to beat the top teams so you don’t have too. They also drew Dortmund at an early enough stage that they didn’t seem to be taking the Europa League seriously and had their best player injured.

You also then need luck/ decisions to go your way when your not at it. The Red Star tie for them was that, at home they won 3-0 but Red Star had three goals ruled offside of which 2 were from the tiniest of margins and they missed a penalty.

In the away league they were incredibly fortunate not to get hammered even starting 3-0 up, Red Star scored an early goal then missed 5 massive chances in the opening 50 minutes of the game before they scored with a big deflection on their first real attack to kill the tie. That’s not aimed at slating them but that is the sort of luck you need when you are being outplayed and only still winning due to the opposition continually missing sitters.

Essentially you need to be hard to play against and clinical when your opportunities come along, and get a bit of luck along the way, we didn’t do either of the first two in most of our European games this season.

Getting a lot of this side exposed to it can only be a good thing though..

Hopefully we get an Anderlecht level type side we can pip to third place and be ready for a decent challenge in the Europa..

Think that's our best hope for now..
