Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou has confirmed Leigh Griffiths will be released by the club.

The 31-year-old striker is currently on loan at Dundee and will become a free agent, although he could continue playing for the Dens Park side.

Griffiths - who signed a new one-year deal at Parkhead last summer - has made 261 appearances over eight years at Celtic, scoring 123 goals.

"I think that's come to an end, yeah," Postecoglou told Sky Sports News when asked about Griffiths' time at Celtic.

"Leigh is now looking for the next chapter of his career.

An outstanding football career at Celtic. All of us, we kind of pass through clubs, but you want to leave a mark there when you do.

Leigh has certainly done that. I think he can look back on his Celtic career with great pride and he goes on to the next chapter of his football career. We wish him all the best."

Dundee offer contract to free agent Leigh Griffiths as striker’s Celtic career comes to an end

The former Scotland hero has been the subject of intense speculation throughout January after it emerged the Dark Blues had triggered a clause to end his loan deal at Dens.

Griffiths had returned to his old club in August amid much fanfare as he agreed a season-long loan with the Dark Blues.

However, the 31-year-old has struggled to rediscover the form of old with fitness eluding him for much of this season.

After starting a string of matches in the autumn, Griffiths dropped down the pecking order when Danny Mullen returned from injury.

And the lack of impact led Dundee to exercise their option to end the loan deal, for which they were paying a sizeable chunk of his Celtic wages, in January.

Celtic, however, didn’t have a place for him either and they made use of a clause inserted in the contract he signed last summer that meant they could release him.

That has seen his time with the Hoops end exactly eight years after it began.

And now makes him a free agent.

Despite ending his loan at Dens Park, Dundee boss James McPake still wants Griffiths as part of his Dark Blues squad.

Leigh Griffiths: Dundee boss James McPake provides update on bid to sign outgoing Celtic striker

Dundee manager James McPake says talks with Leigh Griffiths are continuing as he admits his team need more firepower after dropping to the bottom of the Premiership table.

Former Scotland striker Griffiths, who is expected to be released from his contract at Celtic, saw his initial loan spell at Dundee come to an end on Monday.

He was in the stand at Dens Park as a goalless draw against Dundee United saw McPake’s men slip below St Johnstone on goal difference.

Leigh was at the game and talks are ongoing,” said McPake when asked for an update on Griffiths’ situation.

Pressed on whether he was optimistic a deal could be done, McPake replied: “He’s not my player. He was at the game - wearing a horrendous jumper, by the way.”

Leigh Griffiths has knocked back a permanent deal with Dundee.

The striker is a free agent after his Celtic contract was terminated last month.

He has been on-loan at Dundee for the first half of the season.

Manager James McPake offered Griffiths a short-term deal until the end of the season.

Griffiths has decided to look at his options elsewhere.

Ambitious League One side Queen’s Park are amongst those who are keen to land Griffiths.

The 31-year-old is looking to get his career back on track after an indifferent end to his Celtic career.

St Mirren boss Jim Goodwin has confirmed he is interested in ex Dundee forward Leigh Griffiths

The Buddies may find themselves without Eamonn Brophy after he limped off the field in Tuesday’s 1-1 draw with Motherwell.

Brophy could face several weeks on the sidelines after suffering ankle ligament damage.

Goodwin says he is waiting on scan results for his top scorer before deciding his next move.

We’ll wait for the scan to find out what our next move will be,” the St Mirren boss told Clyde 1.

“If it’s going to be four or five weeks then yes, we will look at the free agent market.

“It’s not a market I enjoy looking through because they are free agents for a reason – but needs must.

Asked specifically about Griffiths, Goodwin replied: “He’s on the list. He is a free agent. I know there are a number of clubs out there speaking to him at the moment so we’ll wait and see what comes.”

    Saints link rubbished
The former Scotland and Celtic striker’s Dens Park departure was confirmed yesterday.

James McPake is understood to have offered Griffiths a short term deal until the end of the season on reduced terms, but the player decided to pursue options elsewhere.

The 31-year-old is also reported to have attracted interest from League One side Queens Park.

Reports this morning also suggested St Johnstone were keen on a move for Griffiths, but that was quickly rubbished by the club’s recruitment chief Stevie Grieve.

Griffiths featured 17 times for Dundee this season scoring just three times as he looked to kick start his career.

From competing to be the number one striker at Celtic to having no club at all. What a fall.

Former Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths is set to join Falkirk on a deal until the end of the season.

The 31-year-old is now a free agent after his loan at Dundee - where he made 17 appearances and scored three goals - came to an end last week.

Falkirk have moved quick to sign the Scotland international, with manager Martin Rennie aiming to guide the club into the Championship.

Automatic promotion hopes are slim, with the club 22 points behind leaders Cove Rangers, but just two points separate the Bairns and Queen's Park who occupy the final play-off spot.

Griffiths - who signed a new one-year deal at Parkhead last summer - was released by Celtic after making 261 appearances over eight years at Celtic, scoring 123 goals.

However, after confirming his departure from the club, Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou told Sky Sports News: "He had an outstanding football career at Celtic.

"All of us, we kind of pass-through clubs, but you want to leave a mark there when you do.

"Leigh has certainly done that. I think he can look back on his Celtic career with great pride and he goes on to the next chapter of his football career. We wish him all the best."
