Great match from diet-Federer. Shame that Dimitrov will be viewed as someone who didn’t quite fulfill his potential as he’s great to watch.

You know when the “strange behaviour for some who support our club” line gets trotted out that the argument has been lost.
It’s nothing more than the final desperate throw of the dice tbh.

but this will devalue the tournament further :86:

So another unvaccinated person being victimised. Another who has been allowed into the country to begin with. They must not have had any intelligence at the time of allowing her in either.

It’s a shame that even the tennis thread has now descended into a covid/vaccine argument.
I * hate the way covid dominates pretty much all aspects of our lives now.

Pretty bad look for him. He’s either lying or twisting the story to try and get his exemption. Or he’s so reckless that he did in fact pose with kids despite knowingly having Covid.

It’s a difficult one for me. I’m generally not for people being treated differently based on vaccination status, but there are thousands of Australians overseas who wouldn’t get the same privileges so it was predictable that there would be a bit of a backlash. It doesn’t help that Djokovic has acted like a bit of a * since the onset of the pandemic.

You’re not “happy to see everyone treated the same” - you’re actively campaigning for a individual to be treated based on his status.

If you were truly happy to see everyone treated the same, you wouldn’t be wanting special exceptions to be made for anyone.

He should be subject to the exact same rules facing anyone else entering Australia, irrespective of that they may be.

No idea why he feels as though his status should give him some form of privilege, or why anyone here would back at that issue.

Simply a case of applying a consistent set of rules to anyone entering the county. If he doesn’t meet those requirements then he doesn’t get in.

See instead of jumping in with two feet, maybe have a read back. I think everyone should be treated the same in the sense that a negative result should be suffice to enter any country. I think the way not only Djokovic, but any unvaccinated person is being dealt with in terms of travel and certain rules in some countries is shocking. That’s what I don’t like. The way Australia have handled the situation has shown them up to be incompetent at best also.

The fact remains - if you believe Djokovic should be allowed entry to Australia under the circumstances, then you are not advocating for everyone being treated the same.

Australia only look incompetent to those who have no idea about the restrictions currently in place, or what the country’s ‘ordinary’ people have been through over the past 2 years or so.

Australia has both a state and federal government, much like the US. The state is almost entirely responsible for regulation pertaining to the Open. The federal government is obviously responsible for border control. This system is also seen in the US.

Novak’s exemption was approved by the state of Victoria and negotiated by Tennis Australia. The exemption allows him access to venues, including Melbourne Park. Critically, it was not:

    1) clearance to enter to the country
    2) an exemption from his Visa requirements

That doesn’t even touch on how the ordinary citizens of Melbourne have lived. Months at a time in a 5km bubble from their house. Most of them with friends and family they haven’t seen in years because entry has been impossible until recently, and remains expensive and impractical for most.

None of this really matter though. It’s simply a case of Novak not having the required documentation to gain entry to the country of Australia, Australia correctly sticking to the rules despite his status, and Novak and Co. throwing a tantrum about it.

Genuinely wouldn't shock me if he deliberately got someone to cough in his mouth in December

His exemption was initially backed by the Prime Minister. It was only after there was such an uproar that he backtracked. The fact this has all been approved and the players have been allowed to travel, only to then be put into a hotel and have their visa cancelled is a bit of a shambles.

The exemption granted to him by the state of Victoria was accepted by the prime minister. The government of the state of Victoria has nothing to do with border cit too or entry to the country.

Again, it’s simply false to “this has all been approved”. Entry to Australia for Novak was never granted by the government of Australia under the circumstances.

Likewise, the players “being allowed to travel” is squarely on them. You too could travel to Australia today, but unless you met the entry requirements, you wouldn’t be allowed through border control.

Ultimately, the biggest point here should only be that he shouldn’t be exempt from any of the rules facing anyone else entering Australia, and I say that entirely irrespective of his vaccination stance.
