That's effectively robbing the person in pole. Lead the race for the majority, done nothing wrong and built a 12 second lead... All for nothing. The safety car just give advantage to everyone behind.

Basically what happened is Hamilton was 2-0 up on the 90th minute and they decided to reset to 0-0 and give Verstappen a penalty.

Perfect analogy. That's exactly what just happened.

Not necessarily. It was only so easy for Max because of the new tyres.

Even at that though, that's just what happens with a safety car. They need to bunch all the cars to let the marshals clear the track

Bit economical with the truth in the "built 12 second lead" part - it was about 4 seconds before Max 2nd pit, which made it around 17-18seconds and was cut back down to 11-12seconds before the safety car.
No safety car and Lewis would have won it, but it would have been within 8 seconds or so. It wasn't a built lead of 12seconds.

But that's nitpicking - I am very glad to see Max beat Lewis here, but the restart of that safety car was off, wouldn't blame Mercedes questioning that to be honest.

A mental end to the race, but Mercedes strategy * that there for Lewis. Based on his pace if they pitted after Max during the VSC he would have easily passed him.

They should be releasing the cars again from a starting run at the times before the stoppage.

As I said, all they've done is give advantage to second place.

Why? It's never been like that and likely never will be.

It would be unbelievably unsafe to let cars build up the gap they had before the safety car.

I'm not a racing fan. Watching it because there was nothing else on but that finish is BS.

If I was on Mercedes, I'd be dropping bodies.

What's the point of building up a lead then? That's the point. You're taking away to sporting egde.

For a neutral, or a none fan such as your self, aye that was a weird and very poor end. Exciting final lap, of course in isolation, but the restart was questionable to say the least.

That's just the joys of racing unfortunately. If a safety car happens then the entire lead is wiped out.

The way it happened was pretty * but funny since Hamilton never won.

It’s car racing, they opted to allow them to race rather than end it in a procession behind a safety car. Any neutral should be happy about that.

Hamilton and Merc will be * but those are the breaks - over the course of the season Merc benefited from decisions over Red Bull.

Long time F1 fan. Neither up nor down about LH or MV, so no dog in this fight. That said, the final decision by the Race Director was a piece of nonsense. You can't bastardise the rules to 'spice up' the ending. Merc have been screwed over - they set their strategy according to the rule-book.

Reminded me of next goal wins when the other team is winning by a decent margin. Ragin! haha

I don’t watch F1 so don’t know the rules but it seems it’s a questionable decision from the director to pick the “drama” option. Fine for the neutrals like myself but it’s brutally unfair on Hamilton.

Question for those that think the decision was wrong - would your opinion change if Hamilton had a fresh set of tyres on?

    I don’t think my opinion would’ve changed.

Edit: Although I don’t know if I think it was strictly ‘wrong’ since so don’t know the rules well enough. I think if the rules allow that and it happens throughout the season it’s a bit of a farce but each to their own.
