Last year, yes. This year, no. Messi thoroughly deserved it.

The greatest ever, without any shadow of a doubt.

Very selective stats mate, which also aren’t accurate (either to the date that voting ended or the current date).

Lewandowski had a phenomenal year, I’m not denying that in the slightest, but if you’re comparing stats up to the point voting closed, then here’s some for you.

Lewandowski scored more goals, but Messi had double the assists, more shots on target, one third of Lewandowski’s big chances missed, over three and a half more successful passes, four times more successful dribbles, more than double the chances created, almost three times as many tackles, more recoveries, more points won by goals, more points won by assists, more match winning goals, more match winning assists and more than double the man of the match awards.

He was La Liga’s top scorer, the Copa’s top scorer, the Copa’s top assister and the Copa’s MVP.

I watch Barcelona every week and anyone who does is not surprised at all at how much they’ve struggled since Messi left. They were a one man team last year and that one man was absolutely superhuman. I also watched the Copa America and Messi was simply sublime.

Put it this way, if Messi and Lewandowski swapped places in January, Bayern would have at the very least won the Bundesliga and Club World Cup (like they did). I’d have put a lot of money on that Barcelona or Argentina wouldn’t have won a thing.

I’m not putting Lewandowski down at all, he’s a phenomenon but Messi is simply on his own level.

Aye, no debate that Messi isn’t phenomenal I just think Lewandowski’s been on a different level. If not for his injury last year Bayern’s getting the CL again I think, all if’s and but’s however Lewandowski has been phenomenal. Very nice touch for Messi to point it out about 2020 in his speech as well.

Definitely a classy touch and needed said. It should have been awarded to Lewandowski last year without a shadow of a doubt and it’s farcical that it got cancelled given that the games were still all played. They should definitely be awarding it retrospectively.

I also totally forgot that Lewandowski was injured when PSG knocked Bayern out, so that adds weight to his argument too, but I’d still go Messi.

Though for what it’s worth I’d probably have given it to Messi every single year since 2009 tbf so I might be biased :56:

You'd have to think neither Messi nor Ronaldo will win it next year... something to look forward to at least

Surprised by how much people are shocked at the outcome.

The guy carried a club on his own for the first 6 months, won a major trophy for his country almost single handedly then has done OK since moving to a new country.

Lewandowski was outstanding this year but Messi the deserved winner.

The undisputed goat, not even up for debate anymore.

Lewandowski is the only one who can feel disgruntled.

Toni Kroos said its absolutely not deserved then says Benzema and Jorginho are more deserving. Load of *. Jorginho won 2 big trophies but let's be honest, not really a standout in either Chelsea or Italy. Benzema a great player, but Messi had a better last season.

Jorginho has never had a better season than Busquets or a fraction of his hype yet is somehow in BdO conversation. It's absurd but BdO has turned into a marketing gimmick since CR & Mendes made it a mission to game the award

As for Leo, I always go back to what Maldini said a decade ago - he should win it every year, he is unrivaled

A measure of the standards the guy is living up to every single time he steps on a park.

Folk want magic from him twice a week and he’s been pretty much delivering that for 17 seasons.
