Aye he done a job last season but he’s nowhere near good enough. It says more about how * Duffy is than how good Welsh is.

People will still rate him though cos he’s not having complete howlers though. Losing men at crosses constantly doesn’t seem to resonate as much as something like Starfelt having a dodgy pass back.

Runs with the ball weird though.

Mental that some people think Welsh is better or at the same level.

Don't get the criticism, still young for a defender with lots of room to improve. Doesn't make glaring errors that's we've seen plenty of experienced players making at CB for us over the years.

Just to add, Starfelt should obviously be starting when fit. I'm just happy to keep Welsh around as back up and hopefully continuing to improve.

Such a lovely lad - but not at the level required. There can’t be any doubt about that.

Thought he was excellent in the 2nd half, first to nearly every ball, composed in his passing..

But, has zero presence as a defender and that's the worry for me.

We need quality in all areas of the park, at this moment in time we don't have that, Welsh is a good player but we need better in that position.

He is young though. Presence can be taught. Gym work to bulk up, jumping exercises to gain height and strength in the air and attention to focus and mental strength can all be worked on. Measured aggression and psyching out an opponent could be learned from YouTube. Gavin Strachans laptop may have a use yet.

Not making big mistakes is a real start. To put a positive spin on it. Welsh has real potential.

True. But doesn't mean with some development the answer can't be Welsh anyway.

When they're both available, at the moment, i'd pick Welsh over Starfelt every day; not even close. Can't really remember him doing anything wrong last night. Was getting blamed for the first goal when it was out of his hands. Thought Starfelt was improving before he was injured but Welsh doesn't deserve to be dropped straight away when he's available again.

Welsh was absolutely fine last night. Thought he actually did well or am I missing something? For a CB of his age and experience I think the signs are hugely promising. We need a calm, dominant CB big time. Hopefully Jullien is that man, but as they say absence makes the heart grow fonder.

    I'd agree with this.

His height and presence is an issue. Perfectly happy with him as a squad player.

    I dunno about miles better.

I think he is better but we paid £4.5m for him and he's a Swedish international so I'd expect him to be better. This is a 22 year old from our academy.

I think CCV is streets ahead of both, personally. He is the same height but has the presence and leap to make up for it. Think he's fantastic. I'd have Jullien and CCV as my first choice, we really miss Jullien's height.

It's a pity we don't play a 3 man back line. Welsh would be a good sweeper.

Aye and I think it's taken him a while to get to grips with the pace of our league. The Russian league is a much slower tempo than ours. I'm expecting him to keep on steadily improving..

I agree about Carter-Vickers being our best at present and I do think Jullien is the best at the club. That could be a good partnership as Carter-Vickers is a bit of a bully and Jullien is terrific in the air, usually good on the deck with both feet and a bit of a big game/experienced player..

Welsh is ok but I just think he lacks a lot to be a first team player here. He's a bit below all 3 for me..

Fine defensively today. Needs to be braver and more decisive in his passing though. Too slow to pick one out

Keeps making the same mistakes and isn’t learning. Constantly lunges in at attackers when they have their back to him and either gives away a silly foul or gets turned.

    Haste ye back, Carl.

I thought he was good today and thought he played some great passes. Always seems to be hardly judged.
