If he keeps possession then it doesn’t matter. I’d rather he did that than try to play a pass that isn’t on.

I’ll keep saying it, he might look awkward on the ball at times but he rarely gives it away cheaply.

It’s not being particularly good on the ball though, is it?

His passing numbers are good. They were very good in Russia as well. He doesn’t lose the ball often.

I’m not saying he’s Ajer or VVD levels on the ball. I’m simply saying he’s steady on it and far, far better than many give him credit for.

I don’t think not losing the ball means your good on the ball. Just means you know how to keep it simple, the defenders that are actually good on the ball will tend to lose it more often, because they’ll see and try that difficult ball rather than just playing it safe.

Or you get the other kind, like Efe Ambrose, who was * great on the ball but still a * bombscare.

I’m happy if he plays it safe, as long as he keeps doing it cos he shites it when he needs to do anything out of the ordinary.

The fact we've lost 4 goals in the last 2 games, and two from cross balls in the Dundee game, shows how much we actually miss him in there....

Only conceded 2 in the 6 games before that.... :Fear:

He's had a shakey start. But then that backline was honking for the first few weeks of the season.

Once Hart and CCV came in, it settled pretty quickly to be fair.

He showed some absolute howlers in his first 3 games or so, major alarm bells rang, but once things got organised (thank you Hart), it has clicked fairly well with Starfelt in the backline.

His distribution is fine, the one and only thing he needs to completely cut out is the fact he takes a bit of time to get into a game but that can be attributed to the fact he had just moved here and was living out a suitcase for months in a strange country with a bunch of new team mates.

I think/hope folk appreciate him a bit more, his defensive style is the reason Ange wanted him - he suits being a centre half in a team that is so focussed on attacking as is CCV. That being said big Jullien will provide a whole other dynamic with his heading ability.

I'm intrigued to know if Ange would adopt a back 3/5 and have the fullbacks go ultra inverted if we had starfelt, ccv and Julien on the pitch

    Just thinking out loud.

He’s good at winning defensive headers. Missed that the other day. Looks like we have some good options at CB now with Julien not far away now either.

Give me 2 dominant CH's who don't * about and can do the basics, like dealing with an ariel threat from the opposition.

Also don't like defenders that dither on the ball, you build a winning team from the back.

I hope your joking here. Starfelt had a reputation here for giving the ball away cheaply when he first started. He's another Ambrose who can put in solid performances but always gives you the fear, in my opinion

Starfelt had a really bad first game & some peoples opinions haven't changed of him from that even if he has been good. I have to admit i called him a bombscare after Hearts but think he has got better game after game. Starfelt makes one mistake in a game even if it doesn't lead to a goal & he gets dogs abuse. CCV does the same & nothing is mentioned really hate when this happens to players.

CCV is a really good player but he seems to have the same protection from fans that McGregor does when making a mistake. If you call it out for one player it needs to be done for all.

Julien’s passing is something I think gets overlooked quite a lot, with wingers as effective as we have I’m looking forward to it

100% this Julien wasn't Van Dijk on the ball, I don't think many centre backs are but he was certainly as effective as Ajer when he was on the ball. Ok, sometimes got a rush of blood and tried a cross field pass that would fly out a stadium but he always liked to ping those diagonals and they come off a lot of the time. Provided he comes back the same player, I reckon our defence will be good to go

Good stuff. We clearly became weaker when he was out just as our defence was starting to rack up clean sheets
