Football is a magical sport, which allows millions of fans around the world to connect with one another. This sport, symbol of sharing, also conveys many universal values. In the case of Celtic, family seems to be an important value. Let's discover some of the siblings and relatives who have played for Celtic.

    Family McStay

The McStay brothers, Paul, Willie and Raymond, followed in the footsteps of their great uncles, Jimmy and Willie who were both captains. Willie played 67 times for Celtic, which led him to play in England for Kilmarnock and Sligo Rovers. Paul had the most important career: he played 515 games for the club as a midfielder and captain, he won 3 league titles, 4 Scottish Cups and the Scottish League Cup. Raymond, on the other hand, was only on the bench, he then played for Hamilton Accies but an injury forced him to stop playing football. This sibling is very well known but Celtic is not a special case, there are for example siblings who have played for Rangers.

Twin Czech players in Scotland: Filip and Patrik Twardzik

Born in the Czech Republic, they studied and played at a high level in Germany. Their father was a professional football player and they were playing in the youth academy of Hertha Berlin when Celtic first showed interest in the twins. Their youth career really took off in Scotland, despite the different game and the language barrier. They then started their senior career at Celtic. Patrik stayed 2 years before joining Livingston on loan and Filip 4 years before joining Bolton Wanderers.

    Celtic from father to son

In the list of Celtic players there are many father and son duos. Are fathers inspirational and motivational figures or is the passion for football and the love for the club hereditary? Here are some names: Jackie McNamara Snr and Jackie McNamara, Stevie Chalmers and Paul Chalmers, Andy Lynch and Simon Lynch, John Divers Snr and John Divers, Mike Conroy Snr and Mike Conroy, Jimmy McMenemy and John McMenemy.

The list could be longer and each father-son duo would deserve a few lines on its history. Gordon Marshall Sr. has not one but two sons who have played for Celtic. Another unique case is that of Gordon Strachan and his son Gavin: they both coached the club.

.... and from father to daughter

Let's not forget that Celtic also has a women's team! Tiree Burchill, daughter of Mark Burchill, plays with style and has helped her team to shine in the Scottish Women's Premier League in 2021: her debut is promising. Her father made his youth career and the beginning of his senior career with Celtic and then had a nice 17 years career at the international level.
