Some of our supporter's are worried he won't sign if we put a bid in (i think he will). Is the consensus in Portugal that he likely would/will?

I believe there is no "consensus" in something so specific and hardly discussed.

What can I say is that I believe that signing for a big club where he will get play time and still move later to a gr€at€r league (if he wishes) seems like an easy decision to me. Jota has a great family support and an intelligence and education quite above your average footballer. The way I see it, he knows that would be a missed chance to refuse a Celtic offer and risk being loaned to another small team in Spain (like happened in the past) or be a bench player in Benfica and play 5' per month (like also happened in the past).

I can see him getting into some sort of agreement with your board to play 1-2 seasons more and then go earn some big bucks. Happens to all big clubs from small leagues (Benfica included). But I think he would be stupid to gamble his future after he finally found a place where he can shine at a senior level. And I repeat, Jota is quite intelligent and well advised. His family is well structured. I just do not see him rushing out of Celtic at this point, if things continue to go well and Celtic fans show their appreciation for him.

Makes me wonder, in loan deals like this (with a talent from a club arguably better than us and with a player who will clearly have aspirations above us and importantly a buy clause), does the player already aggree to the buy out clause in the first place? Ie, he clearly is aware the clause is there, but does he have a say in one being present (value excluded), before he signs on loan? Making the proposed permanent move "simple"

My understanding is that the player doesn't have to agree to the clause being inserted into the loan deal, but if the clause is met then you still have to negotiate a contract with him, ultimately giving the player the final say regardless.

Having said that, I'm likely basing this largely on Football Manager :56:

Yeah was trying not to assume football manager was the way with it - where we would agree the clause with club only.

You'd like to assume the player may have a say in the option being inserted or not. If he was clearly never wanting to sign long term, then no need for it.

    But who really knows.

    Agree with that.

He’s at a very important crossroad in his career. He’s 22, not young and not old. Hasn’t played nearly enough for his age to be commanding moves where he is selected week in week out at a big club in a big league.

I think he needs to build up a portfolio of consistent game time at a big club which is exactly what Celtic offers. It’s a big opportunity for him to increase his confidence, skill and value and he’d be mad not to take that up.

All that said, I’ve not heard of an option to buy lapsing because a player didn’t want to take it up. I always thought the player had to agree to the option being in the contract, which I always thought included the terms they would sign on.

Only worry would be Benfica promosing him game time for their next season.

I think folk are getting a wee bit carried away with him, let’s chat about big money moves when he’s regularly doing it against the zombies and in Europe for Celtic.

Until then he’s still all promise, albeit the start he’s made thus far has been excellent and he’s provided end product to boot.

At this point, for me, the jury is still out on us splashing out the sort of outlay in his clause never mind anything else. He’s a winger and his form needs tested over a longer period - look at how Abada’s has dipped on the other side of the park.
