Thats fair. No question injuries have severely blighted his career. Lets hope that when he is full up to match speed and fitness hopefully soon we see a really focused and determined McCarthy looking to get back to his best over the course of this season.

Thought he was fantastic when he came on tonight, solid and calmed the entire team. Hopefully gets 90 minutes fit soon as we need that sort of experience in a DFM.

    Was decent..

The criticism was he played too many back passes when we were chasing the game..

He'll be a big player for us..

Not sure he was fantastic but he was OK. Missed a couple of opportunities to receive on the turn and play forward quickly. Think he could be a good one for us though.

Think that’s a very fair analysis. He did a lot of things very well, but there were times that I was screaming at the tv for him to turn or go forwards.

That will come with game time though, I hope.

He's going to help us a lot when we need to see out a game, and if Ange brings him on at half time I don't think Betis score that fourth.

I wouldn't be playing him in home games against the dross, but tougher games 100%

When we get him fully fit and have McGregor available the midfield will be a different level

That scoop up he did was inexplicable, but thought he was OK overall.

    I don't even hope. I've zero doubts..

He's been playing in a restricted position at a high level for year's. I think once he's up to speed he'll show how good he is on the ball as well..

I thought he came on and was a really calming force.

Picked his passes carefully and looked as cool as a cucumber. But at times as other posters have said, he did play with zero urgency as if we were 3-0 up at times with his backwards passes.

Hope he becomes a huge player for us and not just a cameo type player who is injured then plays one game then none for months etc.

The success of our season could hinge on whether he can get himself fit to play week in week out. Having McCarthy in the team allows Ange to tweek the midfield if needed and play McGregor slightly further forward. Having McCarthy as the defensive midfielder and McGregor playing in place of Turnbull would have offered the defence far more protection. The problem is we are only a couple of injuries away from having a major problem due to the lack of depth in our squad.

We’ve got about 9 players out that could be called first teamers, we’re beyond the point of a couple.

A couple of our key players out and we're in the *. You seen it today, with McGregor out we had to play Soro who was very lucky he made it to half time without being sent off.

We had about 9 out, and done very well from middle to front. Think when McCarthy gets back up to fitness we’ll be doing even better on that front.

Think the squads only thin in a couple of areas.

He was excellent tonight. He knows the game and his fitness levels enough to know what he can and can’t do at present. He can be a massive player for us, I pray he can stay fit because he will have such an influence on us in the middle of the park.

Made some weird decisions on the ball when he came on IMO but obviously was told to do a job.

Good thing is he looks less rusty as each fleeting appearance ticks past.
