Think a fully fit McCarthy would've made a big difference can see him sitting allowing McGregor to push up and vice versa tbh

Yeah I agree. I was really hoping for the past few weeks we’d be able to get him some games so he was available for this one.

Yeah, absolutely. A few of us have said much the same in the McGregor thread.

Think he could star for us this year.

Hopefully he is ready to go after the international break as we really could have done with him on form today freeing McGregor to get higher.

I just don't see how we can have McCarthy and Turnball in the same team. They are both incredibly slow players. Like, does Rogic play too? McGregor is quick I suppose but he is so used to playing deep.

When you're playing 4-3-3, you need a quick midfield, your mids also need to be able to drift to wide midfield to cover space. Im not sure where McCarthy fits in to a starting 11 when you've got Cal Mac and then an immobile playmaker like Turnball or Rogic

I'd have Mccarthy playing deep with mcgregor and christie ahead of him.

I have made up my mind on this guy a while ago, having watched him many times for ROI over the years.
He is not the answer. He is a fair weather player, fine and dandy when winning and things going well but no dig out in the guy.
He may do a certain job for us, seeing out games etc but dont expect this guy to dig us out, just not in his DNA.

I’ll be pleasantly surprised if he makes any sort of meaningful impact here.

I think the years of English football has slowed his game down, he will be a huge failure for us and the games will just pass him by I hope I'm wrong but feel older players in they positions don't do well in our league coming from down south

I would agree having seen him play for Crystal Palace for the last two seasons he sits deep works hard gives away a lot of fouls passing is not his strong point. James McCarthy is not a game changer he is a work horse when fit.

Don't think I've been very confident at any point about this signing. There's just a feeling of a 'for the sake of it' type signing for me. Hopefully he's able to come in soon and play to a good standard, but am really not expecting it.

Steven Davis is about 40 and been the huns best player since he went back.

Apart from his injury record I don’t really get the negativity about him tbh.

Aye hes not the most exciting player around, guy won’t be dropping body feints or doing stepovers in the middle of the park but thats clearly not what we brought him in for. He’s vastly experienced, has good defensive nous and is the type of profile we lack in midfield.

The comparisons with Davis are silly. Apples and oranges. Davis is an intelligent footballer that doesn't rely on pace or physical attributes. That's why he's still performing at a decent level and was running rings around Scott Brown last season (someone who does rely on that).

For me, McCarthy is similar to Brown in that he provides energy to the midfield. But McCarthy is 31 in a few months and looks to have his best days well behind him. The worry was that McCarthy's injuries/lack of fitness is catching up with him. It's a genuine concern that we've tied him down on a long and possibly lucrative deal for him to be wasting away in the physio room or spending vast periods out unavailable, which has been the case so far.

Of course it’s madness, but he’s an Ireland international so Desmond will have personally sanctioned it.

It’s * bollocks but we’ve got supporters arguing McCarthy is in his prime right now, so what hope do you have?
