One is still here though and has always played higher. I dont know too much about McCarthy, so i am pretty neutral. But i think his stint at Palace seems pretty decent so i am optimistic about him being able to do a job for us.

Duffy was a hero at Brighton. Villa fans hated Sinclair etc etc.

Genuinely you can't trust their opinion of players as that league churns guys out.

By all accounts, he did play his best football with Everton and Wigan. But played 33 out of 38 games in the 19/20 season for Palace.

Totally agree - for what little it’s worth I’d be sick to see him starved of game time as I’m a big fan.

Around this time last year people on here were pushing we spend 12mill on a permanent deal for Duffy. Opinions

At the bare minimum he'll add experience and a desire to play for Celtic, at the most he'll be a top player in the league.

And although totally unrelated to McCarthy, please some full backs now Celtic :48:

Think Sinclair had about 4 good games for Villa when he was there in 35 games, got the impression he didn't care after been dumped by Man City don't think anyone particular hated him

You know what i mean though. He wasn't rated and had a rough time.

Celtic has proven to be a place where guys can rejuvenate their careers having struggled in England.

In general, we tend to get more consistent players having bought down south even if they are more expensive.

Also, Mccarthy was miles ahead in Scotland as a teenager. He's now coming back here with near 300 EPL appearances, if he's fit i don't see any reason why he would struggle.

I'm hoping that McCarthy and Hart bring that experience and character we need. We've lost a lot of that in the dressing room of late (especially Broony). We need some bite back.

Most transfers are a gamble, and money spent on fees is no guarantee of success, as Barkas and Ajeti have already shown us.

Mixed feelings about Hart and McCarthy signing.
We desperately need experience, they’re British so should settle easily and they should be good value.

    But...
The Ange ‘signings’ seems unlikely, and again it does highlight how poor the overall recruitment is currently.

Fingers crossed these deals work out, and we get the rest of the players we so urgently need

Can't understand the negativity on this deal.

He was a standout in the League at 16/17, he's a more rounded & experienced player now and the general standard of opposition has declined in the SPL since.

If he stays fit then he'll cruise it in this League. Nothing surer.

This is the key take away.

We should've signed him then but let's not pretend he isn't as good as he was when he was 16/17 years old and doesn't have experience spanning a decade of playing top flight football in England.

He's coming to us a vastly improved player than what he was at Hamilton and he could've played for us then.

Makes more sense when you bring into play 2 factors; he’d have been offered more money to stay down south so we have to negate it somehow and more importantly it’s widely accepted a portion of his deal is based on appearance money.

    Yep.

Hes changed and adapted as a player so isn't as all action but that's a similar story to auld Broony.

I'm delighted with this. Never seen it coming tbh I thought it was the usual links.

I don’t think it’s necessarily a bad thing. We need more players who aren’t aiming to do a 2 year stint here and then move on. If he can keep himself fit I imagine he would be an asset for those 4 years.

If Davis can play well at 108, McCarthy should be OK until 34 at the earliest.

Starting to build an experienced spine which is what’s most refreshing after the plethora of links to teenagers and folk in their early 20’s.

One feature of McCarthy's game at Palace was that just about any time he went in for a crunching tackle, he was the one who came out hobbling. It's probably why he didn't pick up too many bookings.:56:

If (and it's a big if) he can remain healthy, he's still a good player. Not much going forward (at EPL level at least) but seems to do a lot of the little things. Good experience as well - seems like it would have helped bringing someone like him on for that final 15 minutes against Hearts when we completely lost control of the game.
