Martin O’Neill has thrown his hat into the ring to be the new Celtic director of football, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.

The former Hoops manager and club legend, 69, is keen on a sensational return to Parkhead.

A Celtic source has told Football Insider that O’Neill has let it be known to the Celtic board that he would be interested in becoming the director of football as the club’s overhaul continues.

As Football Insider revealed in April, the Scottish giants held extensive talks with Manchester City’s Fergal Harkin over the post.

However, an agreement could not be reached with the 44-year-old and the role remains vacant.

The club are looking to fill the void following former recruitment chief Nick Hammond’s exit in March.

Intriguingly, the Celtic board put out feelers to O’Neill last December to ascertain his interest in taking over as manager for the rest of the season.

However, the Northern Irishman rejected their overtures.

At the time, he was not interested on returning to the club he managed with huge success for five years.

But O’Neill still takes a great interest in Celtic’s affairs and watches the team closely.

It is understood he would be keen on a more executive role following Ange Postecoglou’s arrival as manager.

O’Neill took charge of the Bhoys between 2000 and 2005, with three league titles under his belt.

He also picked up three Scottish Cups, a Scottish League Cup and a UEFA Cup runners up medal.

Don’t really see any value O’Neill can bring to us as a DOF when we are in need of modernisation of the whole football side.

To be fair to the board it was O'Neill who put his own name forward, would be rude to dismiss it considering he is a hero to us all. Not that I think he should get it BTW

I have no issues with him having a role at the club and his recruitment was usually pretty solid / got value.

I just don't know how well adapted he is to the modern game. There's probably much better options out there.

    No from me, regarding O'Neil.

Did he not just come out last week * and moaning about the fans and defending Lennon and last seasons *?

Absolute no chance he should be involved in an official capacity with the club going forward/modern if his view is that last season was remotely acceptable in any way, or that the fans were out of order in any sense to have a small protest where some players heard "booo" and "* off"

I kinda done the same. Had to look back for the mistake and seen 44 as well and had to read it a few times to make sure it was Harkin they was talking about.

Pretty much, along with I guess most of us are now trained to look straight for the " " marks and read the direct quotes first/only in these articles. The rest is usually driving a narrative that I rather build up myself.

These names being bandied about for DoF are * tragic.

If true, it's just more "jobs for the Bhoys", and DD should * do one.

I doubt its true, it is football insider after all but yeah O'Neil is not the man to modernise the club. He would have just stuck by Lennon and his mates. He would have got Keane in as a replacement. I also think if he did become DOF he would severely tarnish his name with the fans and I really don't want that.

Wouldn’t be surprised if it ends up being Philip Giles from Brentford.

That's the media. Will our fans ever learn?

If we are to believe this * then MON can't get the job because Strachan has already been appointed

I sincerely hope do mate. I really do.

But you seem to be forgetting who our majority shareholder and board puppet master is.

He's a man who tried to replace Neil Lennon with Roy * Keane. Then when Keane knocked it back due to assistant demands, he doubled down and gave Ronny Deila, the assistant the job.

People seem to think BR was his master stroke... But he wouldn't have went near that calibre of a manager if they weren't Irish/ a Celtic supporter.

He then goes on to instruct the board to dump all CV's and give the gig to Lennon after BR leaves. Lennon who has been "sacked" in his last two positions and has zero managerial prospects.

Fast forward and he's apparently held talks with Keane, again. Bungled the appointment of Howe, and employed a man from the far side of world more for his affordability, than his ability.

If you think DD is beyond appointing MoN or WGS to the DoF role then I'm utterly jealous of your optimism when it comes to that * parasite.
