The away goals rule in European club football is to be abolished from the start of next season, governing body Uefa has confirmed.

The rule, used since 1965, decided drawn two-legged games by favouring the team that scores the most away goals.

All ties level on aggregate at the end of the second leg will instead now go to extra time.

"It is no longer appropriate for an away goal to carry more weight," said Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin.

Meh. Didn’t mind the rule and don’t really see why it needed changed. Probably gonna see more of these changes in coming years and ruining football. Be non contact and 30 mins a half in a few years with 11 subs allowed.

Not a fan of this because I reckon it'll lead to more boring matches. Away teams will just defend.

Never was a fan of it. Especially when we played the second leg at home, and extra time was needed, as it gave the away team an extra 30 minutes advantage with their goals counting for more.

I'd go straight to a penalty shoot out, that way the team at home for the second leg doesn't get the extra advantage off 30 minutes at their own gaff.

Plus no time for a pint after the game if there's extra time.

Good. The away goal made home sides way to conservative not wanting to loose that goal. Now they can attack more.

Makes sense if you ask me.

    * it and go full hog and rinse the system and change it that if no winner is decided within two ties they play a 3rd at a neutral venue. That would definitely lead to more open attacking games as no one club is going to want to add a 3rd game to their schedule.

Either that or have extra time in both games

Stop changing the game all the time back and forth..

Just leave it as it is..

I'm sick of something always being changed or then changed back..

Is the away goals rule that bad? I don't think so..

That is never going to happen. Logistically it would be impossible to do in a short space of time, when the following rounds are so close together. Imagine the situation where all the teams draw over 2 legs, where would the games be hosted where both teams could travel to quickly? And that's before comsidering any covid related restrictions.

So have extra time in both legs if it's a draw

The only time the away-goals rule bugged me was when it came to extra-time in knock-out ties. Wasn’t fair that one team was getting an extra 30 mins to benefit from it.

I always thought it should only exist for the 90 mins, and then be nulled if it went another 30.

    * it, euro 2020 is being played all over Europe during ever changing and confusing covid restrictions in each country.

It wasn't a serious suggestion, but after what some clubs tried to pull with the european super league it wouldn't surprise me if uefa tried ot pull off such a move to try and rake in more money regardless of logistics

Didn’t like away goals. For example that Copenhagen game against us in the EL last 32 - tie is over the minute they make it 2-1 at CP with about 10 minutes to go. I remember the atmosphere went flat as * after that as we knew it was gone. From a neutral point of view, it might have lead to a more exciting remainder of the tie if it wasn’t for away goals rule.

When’s the last time we even benefitted from away goals anyway?

Happy to see the back of it personally. I never saw what it brought to the table. Just play the game.

I think that with away goals it just makes the home teams more defensive anyway.

At least now you won't have the problem of matches being effectively over at half time because the away team scored one or two goals in the first leg.

Can anyone think of any ties where this rule was to our benefit?

I'm going back to the Uefa Cup 2003, we drew 2-2 on aggregate with Celta Vigo. Won the first match 1-0 at Parkhead, lost the second match 2-1 but went through because of Hartson's away goal.

I can't think of any others.

Incidentally, that same season we went out of the CL qualifiers to Basel on the away goal rule.

Always wondered what our team could have done in the CL that season.
