Why is he up here doing these games anyway? Is he not more of a Villa legend than Celtic?

What a player Stan was, could do everything, had every type of goal in his locker, headers, volleys, chips, tight angle finishes, long range, free kicks, 1v1s, then there was his incredible engine, range of passing, his work rate etc, exceptional talent

Stan Petrov admits he initially struggled to settle at Celtic after John Barnes lost the dressing room.

The Bulgarian suffered from homesickness during his early days in Glasgow after arriving as a teenager who couldn't speak a word of English. To make matters worse, the midfielder was often played out of position at right-back as the Parkhead club suffered a turbulent campaign under Barnes.

Rather than throw the towel in, Petrov stuck at it and even worked in a burger van to improve his English. His perseverance eventually paid off when Martin O'Neill took over the club in the following season and Petrov became an idol with the green-and-white faithful.

the 43-year-old confessed he found it difficult playing under Barnes as he opened up on the toxic atmosphere within the changing room.

He told FourFourTwo: "I couldn't understand much of what was going on, due to the language barrier, but there was always fighting.

"I could see little cliques and problems. He couldn't control the powerful characters. It was John's first job since retiring as a player, and a big one for him.

The team was winning, but we had many internal issues. The players weren't giving everything for him. Sometimes a job can come a bit too early for someone, but that doesn't mean they're a bad manager."

After Barnes was given the boot, Petrov soon established himself as a key player in O'Neill's new-look team as the club embarked on a new trophy-laden era.

He said: "He was clear about what he wanted. He took the players he needed from the previous era - the ones with character, fire and quality - and built his own team.

"He brought in Alan Thompson, Chris Sutton, Neil Lennon, Bobo Balde, Joos Valgaeren - huge players for us. Martin knew how to build a team of warriors.

"We didn't fear anyone; we played Barcelona, Lyon and Liverpool, and we weren't scared. Teams feared us when they came to Celtic Park. We had such togetherness and we had winners, and we were hungry for success."

Oh Stan. I hope you’re prepared for the racism accusations. Because apparently you can’t tell Barnes he was * at his job without being racist.

That John Barnes season for some morbid reason fascinates me now. Im always keen to hear stories about it and what it was like in the dressing room

Brutal isnt it??? John Barnes is still bitter about his time with us. The strange thing I always take from that season is "thank * Henrik broke his leg".....which is the strangest thing ever to say. But if he didnt he'd have racked up his usual 40+ goal tally and inevitably pushed rangers harder for the title....maybe even have kept Barnes his job for the next season and then we'd never have brought Martin O'Neil in and all the glory that went with it

Love the fact that all the big players from MON’s team seem to be proper good pals. Always photos popping up of them together.

Aye!? I love him as a pundit, he’s never about hyperbole, points out stuff that isn’t just the obvious and is very fair in his opinions whilst not hiding his love for us. Love the guy.
