We'd be daft not to sign him if he's avaliable for 5mil.

We spent 5m on Barkas, an unproven keeper from the Greek league. Getting Mo for the same money, who has been here for a few seasons now and shown his class and who seems to actually like the city, seems like such a no brainer.

When you see those * rave about the likes of Kent and his return isn't as great. Perhaps pacier and opens up more but for me under the right guidance Elyonoussi is a quality player.

Hes shown it at some crucial points in big games.

Also my opinion is reinforced by a lack of confidence in us to get as good a player for the same amount of money.

Getting him in permanently is an absolute no-brainer if his fee is £5m.

    * me, most of our purchases have been flops recently and they haven't given us much change from £5m.

Buy, buy, buy. Under Howe, I reckon we'll see an even better Moi and I cannae wait!

Is he going to be earning 60 grand a week if he leaves Southampton?

Might be a pipe dream but if this 5 million figure being thrown about is in any way true then it’s literally a no brainer. You can’t buy guys like him for that price.

Wage is the stumbling block for sure.

Under Howe, playing inverted wide men, would suit him I feel for the cutting in he can do.

But cant see a player dropping that wage, surely another EPL club would take a shot at £5million as well for him.

For me to get the best out of him we would need to have a winger that tends to stay wide on the right hand side with decent pace, whether that’s Forrest or another, a left back that has pace and can go on the outside of him and provide width and a left sided CM that is comfortable pushing wide when Elyounoussi cuts in, McGregor is fine there if he is still here.

We would probably be looking to then play either 4-4-2 in the way the Red Bull teams do or Howe kind of did at Bournemouth but I don’t know where you fit Turnbull in that system, as both CM need to get through a power of work and tend to play quite deep or go back to the 4-2-3-1 or a variant of that like the 3-3-1-3 with wing backs bought rather than full backs and Ely playing as the left Forward and Turnbull as the 1 behind the front three, this could be a good option if McGregor leaves as not sure where he would fit this system.

My one concern with him and potentially working under Howe is the pace.

Going forward his Bournemouth team was built on serious pace in the likes of Fraser, Callum Wilson, King etc and he often even played a direct 4-4-2 but is ofcourse flexible.

But I'd like to think he could fit in. As he has the quality.

Really depends how EH would want to play.

This is my concern too, especially with Turnbull in the same team. Say we went 4-2-3-1: that’s not an awful lot of speed in the 3 behind the striker.

That said, it can be mitigated, to an extent, with fast wing-backs or a pacy centre-forward. On the whole though, I just think that, unless he’s playing the 10 role (which he almost def won’t be, with Turnbull in the ascendency in that position), he doesn’t have that bit of an edge that being quick gives you as a wide forward, and that could catch us out in Europe when trying to counter, etc.

If we didn’t have Turnbull, I’d set up a crowdfund myself for the £5m fee and get him here, as I’ve no doubt he’d be an excellent 10, in the hole behind the striker, but there’s no way either he or Turnbull should be playing second fiddle to the other, so for me, it’s a no.

Actually, it’s a v relevant point: unless we’re using a system with two advanced playmakers (something like the old Brazilian 4-2-2-2) where pace doesn’t matter, then signing him could actually cause a tactics/selection headache. Only total solution to it would be to rotate him with Turnbull, and that would be to our detriment. We need more pace in the wider areas.

There's room for both in the squad.

I think for what Elyounoussi has contributed over the last two years is enough for me to think signing him for £5m is a no-brainer.

£5m is daft money for someone for ‘the squad’ though, and my point still stands re accommodating them both in the XI in a way that doesn’t compromise the rest of the team.

It's not about the transfer fee, it's the wages.

You can't have Elyounoussi coming in and being the highest paid player. Every other player will have their agent banging down the door.

I agree there is definitely room for both in the squad, but the wages that Elyounoussi would command mean that he would need to a starter week in week out. We would definitely need to pay him upwards of 35k I would think, and there is no chance we are paying that on top of his transfer fee for him to be a squad player. He is a cracking player in my opinion, but I just don't see us signing him permanently.

I don't mean that he'd be a squad player. We need players that can offer something different. We've been guilty of swapping like for like in games throughout the season.

    Bargain for £5m.

A paceless winger is only a bargain for £5m if the rest of the team is built to mitigate that considerable weakness. I don’t think that’s worth the significant hassle or cost, when we could take (probably less than) that £5m and get a pacy winger of similar quality who probably wouldn’t demand the same sort of wage.
