Clarke would be brilliant if the summer clear out started with replacing our pitch with * narrow astro

 

I know the Celtic way is all about playing attacking football but really the Celtic way is about winning.

I’m not saying I’m an advocate of hiring Clarke but I think the priority of any manager coming in needs to be improving our defence and making us hard to beat. All good sides start by having a strong defensive foundation.

We need to accept that if we want to compete in Europe as well as domestically.

 

Totally get that, but think it's been our downfall for decades now.
We unfortunately do demand instant success. We had a great chance to properly change things under the deila years, but instead of doing what we expect to happen this summer, we cheaped out as per usual.

Now we have a reasonably content challenger again, if we acknowledge a rebuild is needed and desire a different approach to how things have been done in the past, we need to accept that those sort of changes may come with some initial teething problems. Players again not taking kindly to being told they are lazy * and unfit. A drastic change in structure etc, it may end up meaning we don't get out way again.

I'm by no means saying throw away another league title, but we need to be realistic with the expectations when we are going for such a rebuild.

It's not having these realistic expectations which sees us go for a "safe" option with folk who "know the city" as if just being a passionate fan is enough to motivate us through things.

You're correct. First and foremost we have to win trophies. If that happens by playing * football, then it will be overlooked because if we are being successful, then ultimately that is all that matters. It's like when Strachan was manager, the football was pretty dire at times but when we were winning leagues and getting to the Champions League last 16, it wasn't an issue. When you then lose the league though playing that way, time is up. I don't want Clarke, and of course I want us playing great attacking football, but I want us lifting trophies more than anything else.

 

I'd personally be ecstatic if someone of Hiddink's quality were announced. In Europe, we need a manager who knows how to overachieve with the available roster. Hiddink has done that.

 

I think you have to look at the competition we have and the resources we have compared to others. You simply have to deliver instant success because of this. That doesn't mean it has to be someone connected to the club, but it does mean that we have to allow the manager to bring in the players that he wants. Deila might have been the man to change the philosophy, he probably wasn't in all honesty, but he wasn't backed by the board so we will never know for certain. If we appoint the right manager and the board properly back him, then we win the league next season in my opinion.

 

Success and attacking football aren’t mutually exclusive.

And the idea that a defensive manager is some sort of guarantee of success and less risk than an attacking manager doesn’t make any sense.

Anyone expecting an appointment before the season ends? Or even in the next couple of weeks?

 

It’s not a case of true or false. It’s subjective.

I think most would agree that successful teams have a good defensive foundation and that is core to their success. We haven’t really struggled to score goals this season, it’s keeping clean sheets that has been our downfall.

Hopefully, if we get the squad rebuild right, our defence will improve drastically before any work on the training ground takes place.

 

Europe has shown that, if anything, teams from smaller leagues to compete in Europe need to have a modern approach which is pressing high up the pitch and playing out from the back under pressure.

Trying to shithouse our way through in Europe isn’t sustainable anymore.

 

I think its getting the balance right between parking the bus like teams in our league do (or how we played barca) and going kung ho like we do in the qualifiers with a very high line.

Thats why getting a guy LIKE clarke as a defensive coach working alongside a good manager would be lethal to other teams
