Plus balls were heavier, as were the pitches.

Add this to the fact that for much of his career, Maradona was off his * and could still take to the pitch - sometimes mere hours after a party - and outperform anybody on it, and compare it to the likes of Messi and Ronaldo, who spent their entire professional careers playing on pitches like putting greens, in an era where paramount importance is given to peak physical and mental conditioning, where balls are light and aerodynamic, and where tackling is almost forbidden.

This, for me, makes it a no-brainer as to who is the best.

A footballing genius, my father took me to see him in 1979.

he will be remembered for many things, a flawed genius indeed.

his run to tee up Terry Butcher for the best OG of all time was something special! (Only kidding! To this day though I’m not sure who got the final touch?).

the chants from the jungle of Argentina! Argentina! were superb!

a sad day for his family, may his soul and all the souls of the faithful departed rest in peace.

As a lad we played a game called Maradona, basically a goalie and everyman for themselves.

Most geniuses are flawed, that's what separates them from the ordinary and the good...there a fine line between madness and genius.

I pay no disrespect to other greats like Messi, Ronalds et al....but simply for an auld * like me he was the best ever.

It will always be Messi for me, but the GOAT is not an official title it's just an opinion, you make a good case for Maradona. :50:

Maradona was the best player ever for me. Strength, pace, free kicks, overall ability. He had everything. If you roll all the worlds best into one, you have Maradona.

    Absolute Legend.

He got kicked off the park, assaulted constantly and still he got up for more.

Could you imagine him today? Ronaldo and Messi wouldn’t come close if he was offered the same protection and got to play on the manicured pitches of the 21st century.

He was, for me, simply the best player to ever grace a football field. He had everything you need in abundance and carried poor teams to success.

It's a pity he never had the longevity to his career and was prone to indulge in the excesses of life. If we had seen him play for 15 years he would have been regarded by all as the best.

I was lucky to see the best of him during his playing time. Younger folk may not appreciate just how talented he was.

Love the guy. His passion and skill had fans the world over get off their seat. For me he will always be the best in the world. He done it with style and little effort. RIP Diego.

Brazilian Ronaldo in terms talent too. Cases can also be made for Gerd Muller, Beckenbauer, De Stefano, Best, Eusebio, Romario, Roberto Baggio, Platini, Matthaus, Bangura, Rijkaard, McCourt, Maldini, Ronaldinho, Garrincha, Rivelino, Jairzinho and a few others that have reached that truly world class level of player.
