Yes. South American. This is how we solve our cartel issues!

Now another thing, it is the third time i mention this in this post. Why we didn't even try to loan these guys to the belgian, dutch or scandinavian leagues, which would raise their profile, expose them to a better standard of football and possibly make the work permit issue easier? Or did we try and no one want, or what?

CELTIC outcast Andrew Gutman has been selected by Atlanta United in the MLS' re-entry draft.

The full-back joined the Hoops in 2019 after spending time on trial at rivals Rangers.

Gutman signed a three-year deal but was denied a work permit.

He then returned to the States on an initial loan deal with Charlotte Independence before joining FC Cincinnati.

The re-entry draft allows out-of-contract players to remain in the top flight and Atlanta were given first pick after paying around £55,000 in allocation money to secure top spot.

And they will have first dibs on Gutman if he is to be allowed to secure another loan deal or permanent move.

If I remember correctly if he continues playing in the US they have first dibs. If we loan him out or just release him, if they want him he's going there.

If he’s that highly regarded that Atlanta one of the best teams recently have him as first pick why hasn’t he played more for his national team .... because mls don’t want to lose out on money simple as that disgusting

I'd be inclined now, because Atlanta are sniffing, to use the MLS weird system to our advantage (for once).

He looked good any time in pre season here and is well regarded it would seem now in the states.

Sign him up on an extension till 2023/24 and loan him to Atlanta.

From there it's going to go one of 3 ways:
    1. He doesn't make the grade and we let his contract run out/release/accept small fee. Basically where we are now.
    2. He does well, but not well enough for a USA cap, but Atlanta (or others) take real note and decide to pay a bigger fee for him (since contract is in our favour).
    3. He impresses enough with Atlanta and gets that cap, we can then have him back here.

For me, if we have been happy enough going along with this all this time in the hope he gets that work permit, then it makes sense to take another step with it considering the chances are significantly higher if he goes to the top league, to one of the top teams.

Otherwise if we are that so far done with the situations why not have ripped the contract up in summer?

    https://www.onceametro.com/2021/3/9/22321664/red-bulls-close-to-deal-for-celtic-fullback-gutman
After a couple years of outside backs on the outs, the New York Red Bulls are making wide defenders a focus again.

Once A Metro has learned from sources aware of the situation that the Red Bulls are lining up a deal to sign American left back Andrew Gutman, currently of Scottish giants Celtic FC. The deal would be yet another loan contract for both the well-traveled Gutman and the COVID-wary Red Bulls front office.

The 24-year-old Gutman, still unable to acquire a UK work permit to play in the Scottish league, spent last season in MLS on loan with FC Cincinnati before returning to Celtic following the North American season. In the interlude, the Chicago area native’s MLS rights were acquired by Atlanta United in the January league re-entry draft. Sources indicate to OaM that the deal will involve Celtic selling Gutman’s permanent rights to Atlanta and MLS, before moving the player on loan status to New York in exchange for a combination of college draft picks and league allocation.

An offensive-minded fullback who stood out enough at Indiana University to win the Hermann Trophy as the nation’s top college player in 2018, Gutman would be yet another recent example of the Red Bulls poaching young talent (American and otherwise) locked out of the first team of the high level clubs in Europe they’ve earned contracts with. Gutman will presumably be familiar with Cameron Harper, another American youngster brought in by the Red Bulls last week from the fringes of the Celtic first team.

Gutman would join Jason Pendant as the main platoon at the left back position in New York. Speculation that right-footed fullback Kyle Duncan might see more minutes on the opposite side of the field this year will have been quashed by a Gutman signing. He would be the second fullback recruited from the UK by the Red Bulls’ British sporting chief Kevin Thelwell after the loan acquisition of former Stoke City player of the year Tom Edwards.

First-year New York head coach Gerhard Struber has been known to rely heavily on his fullbacks for attacking width and ball circulation, and would not have signed off on a deal for a player of Gutman’s profile were he not confident in his fit for such a system. The coherently-fitting team that the Austrian stated in yesterday’s press conference is more important than any one marquee player is continuing to take shape at the offices in Harrison.

Permanent transfer to Atlanta FC. Who’ve loaned him out to NY RB.

A Celtic great, but not a Celtic legend IMO. YNWA Gutters

What the * is that line even meant to mean? Americans and their stupid descriptions of things.

Good on the lad, Atlanta and NYRB will be a good standard for an American lad. Shame we couldn't get the WP * sorted out at all.

Our transfer dealings are a * mystery between this and shved and we need to stop * money against the wall with these transfers .
With the amount of players needed to come in our recruitment needs to be spot on for the new season .

I'd like to think we will have made money on this one, looked like he could be a player but due to work permit issues was a weird signing.

Signed for nothing and he would have been on low wages so I'll imagine we will have made a small profit on him.

I'd much rather we made signings that had a better chance of being something for us but meh, got to take some risks sometime and low value ones like this aren't the worst.

With the brexit implications for work permit stuff it'll be interesting how future signings go for younger players
