    I think the reason school summer holidays were made so long is so the teachers and pupils could help around the farm during the busy summer months.

    That's probably spot on, the holidays used to be even longer than they are now, although there is a lot of in service days now, didn't get a two week Easter break though.

    I spent most of my childhood summers in Ireland on the farm, my uncles, who at the time were all unmarried used to go over to help with things around the farm and also cutting and stacking the turf for winter.
