Celtic may still be interested in a move for Leeds United defender Barry Douglas, according to Frank McAvennie

The Parkhead legend, speaking exclusively to Football Insidercorrespondent Dylan Childs, suspects that the club’s failure to meet Charlton Athletic’s asking price for Alfie Doughty, 20, may be due to interest in Douglas.

The 31-year-old, like Doughty, is into the final nine months of his contract and Leeds may look to cash in now rather than lose him on a free next summer.

Sky Sports claimed earlier this summer that Douglas was “high up” on Celtic’s shortlist of left-backs and the Daily Mail later reported that talks had been held between the two parties.

The Hoops are in the market for a new left-back after Boli Bolingoli joined Istanbul Basaksehir on loan with numerous bids for Charlton’s Doughty rejected.

McAvennie believes Hoops chief executive Peter Lawwell could negotiate a deal for Douglas.

I’ve been told by sources about the boy at Leeds, Barry Douglas,” he told Football Insider.

“Maybe something is happening with that in the background, I do not know. I do not know what the situation is but I have heard that he is a really good player.

“There are players out there for Celtic to go and get that won’t cost millions and millions. Celtic can pick up players from the Championship.

This boy Douglas is supposed to be good, so why not? I do not know what the transfer fee would be but with one year left on his contract I am sure they could negotiate something. He is not playing so Leeds might want somebody paying his wages.

“If Peter (Lawwell) wants him he will go and negotiate and maybe that is why he is umming and ahing about the boy at Charlton.”

He's not a wing back, which is what we need right now.

McAvennie literally says he doesnt know what the situation is and from that they've managed to conjure the headline that we're interested in the player. More click bait pish from that * website.

One thing he does have is superb quality on the ball, whips in some outstanding balls, better than any current player in our squad.

Defensively I'm a tad unsure of him though, but 352 I think he'd be okay. We've got 3 midfielders who take nosebleeds after they cross the halfway line so. Should be plenty of cover.

Taylor can whip in a great ball as well but not much good when neither have pace and will likely be blown out their * by the time they get a chance to whip one in.

The odd 1 in 10 isn't good enough, he's too busy checking back, Douglas can cross early from anywhere. He'll also take over set pieces.

He's got more in his armoury, it doesn't all depend on pace, remember Burke.

Personally I'd go for a winger, we have enough players to defend. Sorting out the defensive midfield is the main issue. We play in Scotland. Fortunately we don't play against Barcelona and Bayern Munich every week, unfortunately we make even the average SPL teams look like them at times.

Don't see what Douglas bring to the squad that we don't have already. Would just add to the bloated squad wee have.

Celtic-linked Barry Douglas is set for a move to Watford.

He was left out of Leeds’ squad to face Manchester City on Saturday night and has just eight months left of his contract.

He was keen to be part of Marcelo Bielsa’s squad for the Premier League campaign but isn’t viewed as a regular at the club.

And now the Daily Mail say Douglas is now on his way to Watford.

All I'd ever seen about this guy was "may be interested" "may come" to Celtic. In theory anybody may be interested in a move to Celtic. Never saw anything giving me the idea he would be joining. I don't even know who he is, I see sites calling him Scotland International; I don't remember him playing for Scotland.
