CELTIC are plotting to snap up QPR’s £5million-rated winger Bright Osayi-Samuel on the cheap.

The Nigerian-born ace is out of contract next June — and the Hoops could land him for FREE if he signs a pre- contract in January.


But Parkhead boss Neil Lennon hopes a bargain deal can be struck in the current transfer window as he bids to strengthen his options on the flanks.

SunSport understands Celtic’s head of recruitment and ex- Loftus Road scout Gary Penrice is at the heart of the move.


He helped take Osayi-Samuel to Queens Park Rangers PR from Blackpool in 2017.

Penrice has now recommended the winger to Lennon, knowing the Championship outfit could be willing to cash in rather than risk losing him for nothing next year.

Osayi-Samuel, 22, was the target of a £4.7m bid from Brugge earlier this summer.

But in a major cash blow for QPR — who accepted the offer — the player rejected the chance to move to Belgium.




Now others, including Celts, are waiting in the wings to strike a deal.

Crystal Palace have tracked him for a year.


It’s believed they have been discussing a deal which would see them buy Osayi-Samuel before the October 5 deadline, but then loan him back for the rest of the Championship season.

He’s also been stalling on a contract extension and that has encouraged Celtic — especially with the Penrice connection — to believe they could tempt him to Scotland.



The Hoops have already shelled out around £15m on new players as they chase an historic ten successive titles.

But Lennon still wants a pacy wideman and a left-back, with disgraced Boli Bolingoli almost certain to leave Parkhead before the transfer window closes.

Osayi-Samuel played 79 games for Blackpool between 2015-17 before heading to QPR, where he has since made 93 appearances, scoring ten goals.



He is quick with plenty of ability and QPR boss Mark Warburton would love to keep him to provide ammunition for new Scotland hero Lyndon Dykes.

But Warburton, who lost his star man Eberechi Eze to Palace a few weeks ago, is now resigned to winger Osayi-Samuel following the playmaker out the door.

Celts star-finder Penrice played for QPR in the Premier League and was also part of former boss Ian Holloway’s coaching staff.

He returned to the club in May 2017 as recruitment consultant and left last December.

If there is any truth in this and we are interested in this boy then ffs go out and get him! Gambling with the 10 to save a couple of quid. Not the season to be doing this.

 

Away from the puns, although I do enjoy them, he looks a strong and powerful runner. One of them players who looks as if he’s very rarely in control of the ball but he actually is. Would be a good signing if we managed to get him on a free. Wouldn’t pay anywhere near £5m for him though. Think that would be a gamble, albeit I haven’t seen him bar a few YouTube videos

 

Think I read that Gary Penrice took him to QPR from Blackpool or played a big part..

Maybe more in it than initially thought..

If we want him then get it done and hopefully the Penrice link will sway him..
