Celtic are “progressing well” in a deal to sign Brighton defender Shane Duffy on a season-long loan.

Neil Lennon has made it clear he wants to add a central defender during this transfer window after the departure of Jozo Simunovic, with Duffy being their number one target.

The Scottish Champions faced competition from the likes of West Brom and West Ham for the 28-year-old’s signature but Celtic are progressing well to get the deal done.

The Irish international is now set to travel to Scotland to finalise the move – after making it known he wanted to join his boyhood club.

Celtic will pay a significant loan fee to secure Duffy’s services as well as a large part of the players wages.

The defender made 19 appearances for Brighton in the Premier League last season – scoring one goal.

Duffy is set to become Celtic’s fifth summer signing after the arrivals of Mohamed Elyounoussi, Vasilis Barkas, Albian Ajeti and David Turnbull.

Speaking after Celtic’s 3-0 win over Motherwell, Neil Lennon says he’s still looking to add a couple more signings to his squad before the window closes in October.

As far as I was told, both Celtic and Duffy wanted a permanent transfer, and had agreed personal details. This would suggest wages were sorted.

I can only assume the hold up and final demands from Brighton have affected this?

I'm still being told the same, so if it's a loan deal then it's going against what people close to Duffy are saying.

Hopefully turns out like Ajeti where it was widely reported it being a loan and ended up being a permanent

Suppose we'll find out in due course pal. A permanent transfer would be the bollocks.

We need that so badly as without Griffiths in the team our set piece delivery is pretty poor.

I hope your right. I think a big dominant out and out central defender like Duffy is just what we need. He is a real goal threat on set pieces as well. He and Jullien would be a real handful on set pieces.

Apparently we pay all his wage during the loan as well - on 30k a week based off google and his last signed contract in 2018.

Interesting enough deal, we get a good look at him for 1.5million and any doubts, we walk away. If we are happy, we sign him and it turns our to be £6million for a good defender at the age of 28 (assuming we dont be pessimistic and look at him being older next year).
Fair enough deal, if we like him.

Because he is 28 and Lawwell will make no money from a resale.

I always prefer a loan to buy..

Means we can spend elsewhere on a left back or wherever without having to pay this all up front in this window..

6 mill all in for him in his peak year's is a very good deal for us if true..

In the most inflated league on the planet, im surprised if 6 does it..
